Enraged Delivery Driver Takes Food Back After Insisting Customer Didn’t Tip Her Enough

Sometimes people want the convenience of having a nice hot meal without having to make it themselves. Ordering take-out or delivery is a great way to enjoy some pretty tasty food while enjoying a relaxing day or night. There are also plenty of individual circumstances where people may not be able to go out and get the food themselves, and thus they rely on delivery drivers to bring the food to them.

However, this convenience comes at a price, as most delivery fees tend to be a bit on the pricey side. On top of that, it’s usually common courtesy to tip the people who deliver the food. While everyone’s tipping methods are different, most people tend to live by the idea of giving a 15% to 20% tip.

One delivery driver from New York was less than thrilled with the tip she received from a customer back in December 2020. The female driver claimed that the customer’s house in a town in Long Island was extremely far from the restaurant the customer had ordered from, and the driver felt that she was not tipped enough for the long journey she took.

Rather than just drop the food order off, the woman stood outside the house of the person who placed the order and demanded to speak to them. The homeowner’s doorbell camera captured the entire conversation showing the two arguing for several minutes, with neither seeming to budge on their stance. The argument got pretty heated, resulting in the driver eventually just leaving and taking the customer’s food with her.

In the viral video, the delivery driver was determined to get a bigger tip since she believed she deserved it. The driver told the customer that he “must not realize” how far the restaurant was, according to Indy100. She claimed that it took her 40 minutes to drive from the restaurant in Commack to the man’s house in Smithtown. However, the homeowner disputed this, claiming that it’s only a 15 to 20-minute drive. But the woman wouldn’t budge on her stance.

She then insisted that he adjust the tip to better accommodate the amount of time she just spent traveling to bring him his food. “I gave an $8 tip,” the man responded, insisting that it was definitely a good amount of cash for the order he had placed. The delivery driver was clearly upset about this, and instead of listening to the customer’s pleas to just leave the food and go, she decided that he shouldn’t get the meal. She quickly made her way back toward her car with the customer’s food in her hands.

The man was in complete disbelief at the situation, as were many of the people who viewed the video on YouTube. According to Indy100, several people believed that $8 was more than enough for a tip and that the DoorDash driver had acted completely inappropriate. Since then, a spokesperson for the company responded to the incident and  said, “We take the safety of our community extremely seriously, and such inappropriate behavior is never tolerated on the DoorDash platform.” The company also revealed that they had fired the driver following the incident and sent a formal apology to the customer.

Since the YouTube account Driver Man uploaded the video of the angry delivery driver, it has received over 700,000 views and thousands of comments. Most of the top comments on the video take the customer's side, with many arguing that $8 is plenty.

"I’m obviously all for tipping well but????? An $8 tip is 20% of $40 and that bag didn’t even look like $40 worth of food??? Also the guy had literally already paid for the food so I hope she gets charged for theft," one top comment reads.

While the vast majority of the top comments argued that this delivery driver was a "Karen" or "entitled," a former service worker explained that they understood "her perspective."

"As a former delivery driver and also a waiter I get her perspective, my reaction was a bit different. I just realized I needed to find a better job. It's a little sad how little WE PEOPLE, maybe not all of us, don't appreciate our fellow humans. Do you realize how much money it cost to operate a vehicle in most of the United States? Gas alone makes delivery a bad choice for making a living," the viewer commented.

Mike Hayes, a 35-year-old DoorDash driver in Oregon, echoed many of this comment's views in an opinion piece for Insider.

"The base pay for DoorDash is something like $3 an hour, so we are really dependent on tips. If someone only tips $3, that's only about $7 for the entire delivery, which sometimes isn't even worth the gas. I've gotten offers for $3.75 to drive 30 miles, and that's just ridiculous," Hayes explained.
