EMTs Discover Soaked And Freezing Baby, He Becomes Couple's Little Miracle

For many people, becoming a parent is a huge goal and an aspiration. Although everyone’s journey is different, all that really matters is that they give their child all the love, care and attention in the world. Charles and Lorraine Nichols had been wanting to have a baby of their own, and it seemed like the universe was on their side, although their story is much different.

In May 2017, Lorraine was working at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare as a respiratory therapist when a baby was rushed to her unit. The baby arrived alone, soaking wet and freezing cold. The baby had been discovered in Meridian Apartments in Tallahassee, Florida, and was quickly rushed to receive life-saving care and treatment at the hospital, where he was wrapped in a warming blanket that is typically used for newborns. Doctors believed that the unnamed baby had been born about five to seven days beforehand.

Lorraine and her husband of 20 years had been preparing to adopt a child when suddenly it seemed like everything was lining up. The moment Lorraine held the baby and helped him receive the life-saving care he needed, she just knew that he was meant to be her son. It wasn’t long before the Nichols adopted the baby and named him Charlie.

On May 6, 2018 — exactly a year after baby Charlie was found — Lorraine, Charles and many of their loved ones celebrated the incredible milestone of having the infant in their lives. It was also Lorraine’s first official Mother’s Day as a mom.

Celebrating Their Miracle Baby

Steve Suarez, an EMT paramedic captain, received a call on May 6, 2017, about an abandoned baby, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. The baby had been found in the back of a pickup truck and was quickly rushed to the hospital, where he received life-saving care and treatment. Shortly after, the rest of the world heard about Charle’s amazing story.

“You never know when the right circumstances are going to come together and have a miracle,” Suarez said. “And that’s what it was.”

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Charlie has been doing extremely well since being adopted by Lorraine and Charlie. He started walking around the time he was 10 months old and said words like, “dada,” “mama” and “yaya.”

On May 6, 2018, Lorraine celebrated her first Mother’s Day and Charlie’s first birthday, reflecting on all of the milestones they were able to achieve during the past year.

“He just fills that hole that I had in my heart,” she said. “I just feel like I have everything that I need and want and enjoy the fact that I can take care of him.”

Lorraine, Charles and plenty of their loved ones all gathered together to join the celebration. Even the paramedics who responded to the 911 call the year prior were there.

Eunice Arnold, Charlie’s godmother, talked to the Tallahassee Democrat about how excited she is to play a pivotal role in raising the baby boy.

“It’s not every day that a miracle comes into your life,” she said. “As the godmother, I want to do everything possible to help his parents to raise him to be the best young man he can be.” Lorraine added, “We are mother and son now.”
