It is one of the worst things imaginable when a parent loses a child. It is a horrific and indescribable pain. The ache of such loss rang through one mother’s mind as a couple was discovered attempting to snatch her 4-year-old daughter out of their shopping cart at a Wal-Mart in Fort Worth, Texas.

Stories of child abductions are used as a means to keep children in line and safe since the dawn of time. Traditional fairy tales often caution young maidens to be wary of their surroundings and associations. The abduction and murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh is a grim and cautionary tale to all of how nefarious people hunt swoop in on their prey.

Adam disappeared from a video game kiosk at a Hollywood, Florida shopping mall where he had been playing with a group of other boys. Partial remains of Adam’s body was discovered just two weeks later. The family’s story left a nation petrified.

Parents cannot be with their children 100 percent of the time, regardless of the child’s age or capabilities. Parents work, and children attend school and are often in the care of babysitters or after-school programs once class ends. Children often walk to and from school alone or in small groups.

What parent can do to help protect their kids is to be aware and vigilant, as well as to teach their youngsters to do the same. Samantha Runnion was lured from her front yard. Hailey Owens was plucked from the sidewalk shortly after school. Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped right from her bed that she shared with her younger sister.

Another Texas mother, Amanda Cropsey Florczykowski, had been shopping with her then 2-year-old in 2017 when she was approached by a pair of strangers in the check-out line. The couple, she reported to the police, had stood uncomfortably close to her and her toddler. The couple struck up a conversation and asked personal questions about the girl. They also wanted to hold her.

Florczykowski pulled her daughter close and as the couple left, noticed a man in a different check-out lane that was also acting strangely. Was the couple harmless or members of a potential sex-trafficking ring? Who knows, but it was this instinct that could be attributed to saving the little girl’s life

It was the same instinct that led a Wal-Mart loss prevention officer to prevent a possible kidnapping on September 24. The officer noticed a couple attempting to take a 4-year-old girl from a shopping cart. When approached, the couple fled in a vehicle. The incident is under police investigation.

Parents cannot be with their children 100 percent of the time, but they can teach children how to be aware of their surroundings as well as self-defense. Make sure to pass this article along to other parents to help keep their children safe. It could save their lives.
