Emma Heming Willis Shares a Reassuring Update on Bruce Willis’s Health Amid His Battle With Dementia

Emma Heming Willis has learned that there is no easy way to answer questions about her husband’s health. Living with frontotemporal dementia is not a straight line, and Emma has been careful to speak honestly rather than with false certainty. Still, when she talks about Bruce Willis today, her focus remains on stability, love, and the small moments that carry them forward.

Bruce, now 70, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023 after stepping away from acting the year before due to aphasia. Since then, Emma has quietly become one of the most visible caregiver advocates in the public eye, not by choice, but by necessity.

Their family life, she has shared, has always been simple, and that simplicity has helped anchor them through profound change. Bruce is surrounded by care from Emma, their daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, and his adult daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah from his marriage to actress Demi Moore.

In a November 2025 interview with PEOPLE, Emma acknowledged that certain times of year can feel especially heavy for families navigating dementia. She said the holidays can be “so hard,” but emphasized the importance of adjusting expectations rather than abandoning tradition altogether. “You have to learn and adapt and make new memories, bring in the same traditions that you had before,” she shared.

Emma also pushed back against the idea that dementia erases joy. “Life goes on. It just goes on,” she told the publication. “Dementia is hard, but there is still joy in it. I think it’s important that we don’t paint such a negative picture around dementia. We are still laughing. There is still joy. It just looks different.”

Those words capture how Emma approaches caregiving, not as an act of constant grief, but as a practice of presence. That perspective carries through everything she does, from advocacy work to public appearances, and it frames what she would later share on national television.

Emma’s message about caregiving has increasingly reached beyond her own family. In early November 2025, she spoke at Carefest 2025, a three-day summit hosted by the nonprofit Caring Across Generations, where she outlined the full scope of her role. “I’m caring for two young daughters, as well as my husband Bruce, as well as his aging mother, as well as mine,” she said. She also acknowledged the resources available to her family, noting, “We’re in a very privileged position. It’s almost like you have to be a Hollywood icon movie star to be able to afford it.”

That advocacy was formally recognized when Emma received the "Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion Award" at the Hidden Heroes gala in Washington, D.C. The morning after the ceremony, she appeared on Today, where Savannah Guthrie asked the question Emma says is always difficult to answer: how is Bruce doing? Calling it a “loaded question” that is "hard to answer." Emma answered with care:

“But honestly, today, great. He is surrounded by love and care, and he is doing really well with an unkind disease.”

Her response reflected the same grounded outlook she has shared elsewhere. Emma has explained that Bruce never dwelt on his fame or legacy and that humility remains part of who he is today. For her, the focus is not on what has been lost, but on what remains: “I think for us, it’s just about me being able to be there and be present with him.” That presence, she believes, is where joy still lives.
