Emma Heming Willis Revealed She Felt She Was ‘Free-Falling’ Upon Hearing Bruce Willis’ Diagnosis For The First Time

On Aug. 13, 2025, Emma Heming Willis sat down with Diane Sawyer for an ABC special, offering a heartfelt update on her husband Bruce Willis’s ongoing health battle and how their blended family was navigating this difficult chapter. Her candid words come more than three years after the beloved actor’s retirement shocked the world.
Back in March 2022, Bruce’s family announced that he would be stepping away from acting due to aphasia, a condition that affects language and communication. According to Johns Hopkins, aphasia occurs when a specific area of the brain responsible for language expression and comprehension is damaged, making it difficult for someone to speak, understand, read, or write.
In early 2023, the family revealed a further diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes FTD as a degenerative brain disorder that often changes behavior, personality, and social skills. Emma has since been open about the emotional and logistical challenges of caregiving, as well as the importance of community support for families in similar situations.
Dementia, which refers to a decline in mental ability that interferes with daily life, affects millions of Americans each year. The CDC estimates that nearly seven million older adults in the United States are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.
Bruce’s career, however, remains a shining legacy in Hollywood. From his breakout role in “Moonlighting” to action classics like “Armageddon” and “The Fifth Element,” he entertained audiences for decades with his charisma, wit, and toughness on screen.
Beyond his film achievements, he’s a proud father to five daughters, two with Emma and three, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah Willis, from his previous marriage to actress Demi Moore, who continue to surround him with love.

In a sit-down with ABC News, Emma opened up about one of the most challenging moments of her life – the day Bruce received his diagnosis. Known for his legendary performances in films like “Die Hard” and “Pulp Fiction,” Bruce’s on-screen strength has long captivated audiences. But for Emma, the private reality was far more emotional.
“I was so panicked, and I just remember hearing it and just not hearing anything else,” she told Sawyer during their conversation, which aired in full on Aug. 26, 2025, as part of the ABC special “Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey.” Reflecting on that moment, she added:
“It was like I was free-falling.”
Throughout the interview, Emma spoke not only about the challenges her family has faced but also about the resilience and love that have carried them forward. When asked by Sawyer what love meant to her, she shared that their journey had deepened her appreciation for it.
“Love is beautiful. It’s grand. It’s unconditional. I’m so lucky to feel the love,” Emma shared.
In 2024, Emma revealed she was writing a book inspired by her caregiving experience. Drawing on her personal journey, the book aimed to offer hope, guidance, and strength to others in similar situations. Titled “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,” it was released on Sep. 9, 2025.
Her openness has made her a source of inspiration, highlighting the power of love, family, and perseverance in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
