After his high-profile split from Demi Moore in 2000, Bruce Willis doubted he would find love again. But everything changed when he met model Emma Heming. In 2009, Bruce revealed that it took just one date for them to fall deeply in love: “We went on one date, on the Friday before Heming was getting ready to move back to New York, and then we fell mad crazy in love.”

“When you think about where are you going to find that big love of your life, you seldom think it’s someone you already know. You think it’s someone you’re yet to meet,” he added.

Since then, the couple has been inseparable, sharing two daughters, Mabel Ray Willis, 13, and Evelyn Penn Willis, 11.

However, their future was shaken in 2022 when Bruce was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. At the Las Vegas Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Forum on May 26, 2025, Heming spoke alongside founder Maria Shriver about the challenges they’ve faced since the diagnosis.

Shriver, a longtime advocate for brain health, emphasized the importance of caregiving as a unifying issue: “This is an issue that should be devoid of politics, should be devoid of partisanship, and really is something that we just never understood why these issues weren’t the political issues of our time, because they affect every single family.”

Shriver continued: “Why isn’t caregiving the single most important issue that we’re talking about, or women’s health? Why aren’t we rectifying that easily? Because it’s something we should be able to agree on. People are having unbelievable wars in their own families over these issues. This is the war we can solve. This is where peace comes, and I really believe that these issues should be the issues that can bring us together.”

On the day Bruce received his frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis, Heming was “handed only a pamphlet and a hollow goodbye. No plan, no guidance, no hope, just shock.” She stated:

“The future we imagined simply vanished.”

Heming added she tried to hold her family together while caring for the man she loves and raising their two young daughters, all while navigating a disease she barely understood. Unfortunately, FTD, the most common form of dementia in people under 60, has no treatment or cure. After being honored for her advocacy, Heming shared:

“I felt lost, isolated and scared.”

She recalled needing more than medical facts at that moment, such as someone to acknowledge the impossibility of the situation and offer hope. Left with little support, she took matters into her own hands, researching FTD extensively. Her book, “The Unexpected Journey,” released in September 2025, is a candid account of her experience and advocacy.

Heming explained:

“The book is the roadmap I wish someone had handed me... I wrote it for other caregivers desperate for answers, aching for support, and wanting to be seen.”

Despite the personal challenges, Heming has used her platform and access to world-class experts to raise awareness and support legislation around FTD. She said at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health Forum:

“I’m just one of many people doing this work, and together we are making progress.”

Reflecting on her journey, Heming noted:

“This isn’t how I saw my future... but I do choose how I walk it with intention and purpose.”

The entrepreneur, author and founder of “Make Time Wellness” also stressed the importance of openly discussing caregiving, reminding us that one day, everyone will either need care or care for someone they love.

“Hopefully,” she said, “this will be taken seriously by the government one day.”
