Bruce Mathers reportedly passed away from a heart attack in his home in Indiana as reported in NME. Bruce had a strained relationship with his rapper son, after splitting from his mother Debbie soon after he was born. He wasn’t a part of Eminem’s life as he was growing up, and when the little boy wrote letters to him, they were returned right back.

Eminem’s feelings about his absent father are dotted into his lyrics, including this phrase from the song “Cleanin’ out my Closet” from 2002.

“My...father must have had his panties up in a bunch

'Cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye

No, I don't. On second thought I just...wished he would die

I look at Hailie, and I couldn't picture leaving her side”

Eminem’s rage is evident in the song, but it might not have been Bruce’s fault that he was estranged from his family. Bruce wrote an open letter in 2001 accusing Eminem’s mother Debbie of keeping the two apart.

The rage that young Marshall Mathers III felt from his family problems fueled his music in a way that shot him to the top of his game. And now he is a doting dad to his daughter Hailie, who is now all grown up with a social media following of more than a million.
