Being the child of a celebrity poses some interesting challenges. When you have a famous parent, you have multiple paths in life to choose from. You can take the path of anonymity and try to blend into the background as much as possible. Or, you can take advantage of your family's notoriety and use it to your advantage.

In either case, being the child of a celebrity is not an easy process. Many feel that they always live in the shadows of their parents, with unrealistic but constant expectations put upon them. After all, they didn't choose that life. An example of this is Eminem's daughter, Hailie Jade Mathers, who has managed to find a balance between fame and privacy.

The daughter of world-class rapper Marshall Bruce Mathers, or Eminem as he is most commonly known, has taken a middle ground. Anyone who follows Slim Shady's music will know about Hailie. From Eminem's popularity in the late 90s, he continuously rose on a higher path to fame. His first album Infinite —which was released in 1996 —didn't necessarily bring him to the top of the charts. However, his second album — The Slim Shady LP — really kick-started his career after it's release in 1999. In total, Eminem released seven studio albums between the '90s and the end of the first decade of the 20th century. According to Billboard, Eminem was one of the best-selling artists between 2000 and 2010 and according to Rolling Stone, Eminem $32.2 million in combined sales from the decade. His fame took him from the eastern part of the United States to the west coast of Los Angeles. Despite his rapid rise to fame, Eminem's daughter Hailie has always been a large part of his life and image.

Whenever he is rapping about the struggles of the underprivileged classes of America, he often mentions his daughter. He is never shy about being personal in his messages, and little Hailie is a constant source of inspiration. Whether listening to "Hailie's Song," "97' Bonnie & Clyde," or "Mockingbird," you will hear her name dropped amongst his high-speed tongue-twisting.

The prominence of Hailie in Eminem's music speaks to their father-daughter relationship. In "Hailie's Song" Eminem even referred to how his daughter has grown up with the lyrics:

"My baby girl keeps gettin' older / I watch her grow up with pride."

In the same song Eminem continued to rave about how proud he is of Hailie, and how lucky he is to have her:

"Man, if I could sing, I'd keep singin' this song to my daughter / If I could hit the notes, I'd blow somethin' as long as my father / To show her how I feel about her, how proud I am that I got 'er."

In "97' Bonnie & Clyde," Eminem again alluded to the closeness he feels with Hailie, and his affinity for their father-daughter relationship:

"Ninety-seven bonnie and clyde, me and my daughter / Just the two of us."

Although Eminem has a close-knit relationship with his daughter Hailie, he — unfortunately — does not have the same reverence for Hailie's mom, Kim.

Eminem had Hailie with Kimberly Anne Scott, better known as Kim. According to Ranker, the pair met as teenagers. Eminem's mother, Debbie Nelson, recalled in her memoir — My Son MarshallMy Son EminemSetting the Record Straight on My Life as Eminem's Mother — the day that Eminem brought Kim home. She wrote:

"Marshall arrived home from school with a tall, sulky blonde girl. He introduced her as Kim Scott and said she needed a place to stay. I was happy to help out...I looked on Kim as a challenge, someone I hoped I could give a better life to."

Kim was pregnant not long after moving in with Eminem and his mother. Hailie Jade Mathers was born on December 25th, 1995, Hailie Mathers and is Eminem's only biological daughter. Given that Eminem was born on October 17th, 1972, and Kim was born on January 9th, 1975 — the two were a young set of parents at 23 and 20. The young couple got married when Hailie was just four years old in 1999, and the tying of the knot was timely, as it happened just before Eminem would go on his first major tour. Unfortunately, the marriage wasn't to last.

The star couple often called "Kiminem," divorced in 2001 as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Similar to him reaching a career milestone after his marriage, the divorce was also punctuated with a rise in Eminem's recognition. During the same year Kim and Eminem got divorced, Eminem won a Grammy for the category of 'Best Rap Album.' The couple then got remarried five years later, in January of 2006. They eventually re-filed for a final divorce only a few months later in April of 2006.

Regarding what the divorce meant for Hailie, the judge granted joint custody to the couple, allowing Eminem to maintain a place in raising their daughter who was ten years old at the time of the divorce. The couple also divided their property.

Despite a history of not being the most civil towards each other — including Eminem writing a rather lewd song titled Kim, and even filing a motion against Kim speaking badly about him in public — it was reported the divorce wasn't filled with the previous drama. The judge who conducted the divorce, Judge Antonio P. Viviano, said of the couple:

" [They] conducted themselves with dignity and respect. All in all, they are a very fine couple to deal with."

According to Metro, the family continued on in a rather friendly manner in Detroit, Michigan, even though it was a split one.

With divorced parents and the pressure of fame, it's needless to say that Hailie Jade didn't have the most traditional childhood. Although her father Eminem is still making music, he isn't experiencing the rapid-growth of his career that he did in the 90's and 2000's, so the pressure of his career on Hailie has lessened. It's apparent that Hailie Jade has persevered through the adversity she faced. Even though she was featured in many of Eminem's lyrics, and even had a cameo in the music video for "Mockingbird," Hailie has managed to maintain a relatively private life. We know her as Eminem's "little baby" in Mockingbird, but now she is all grown up and rather well-rounded.

From middle school through college, she was popular but was never truly in the public eye. Rather than seeking fame, Hailie preferred to focus on her school and seek good grades. According to IMDb, she even graduated with honors when she left Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Growing-Up

The choice of Hailie living a more private lifestyle than her father was not a mistake. Even though he was willing to drop her name in a song or two and feature her young visage in his music video, Eminem put a great deal of effort into protecting her privacy, and it shows as there are very few paparazzi photos of her. Despite the privacy that Eminem set-up around Hailie, she eventually decided to be more public about herself. In 2016, Hailie decided that she was comfortable letting fans know more about her. She created an Instagram page while attending Michigan State University, and immediately developed a following.

This decision surprised a lot of people. However, fans of her father and many more were delighted to see a glimpse into the girl's life. People immediately noticed the striking similarities between her and her father. Yet, despite similar looks, the interests are divergent. Hailie has shown no interest at all in pursuing music as a career but instead invests more time and interest in other outlets.

From Little Girl To Young Woman

Hailie Jade set her sights on developing a fanbase on social media. As an Instagram influencer, Hailie has become a powerhouse. At last check, she had over two million followers with no sign of slowing down. Her content is focused on "attempting to curate a feed that accurately represents my life," as she wrote in her Instagram bio. She posts about traveling and a variety of other lifestyle topics including fashion and fitness

Despite his fame and public image, Hailie has never posted a photo that includes her father. Naturally, this sparked rumors that perhaps there has been a falling out between the father-daughter pair. She is quick to dismiss this. In a 2018 Daily Mail interview, she said:

"Of course we're very close. He's a huge inspiration to me. But we're different people living separate lives."

Her page is not devoid of men, however. Her boyfriend Evan McClintock is featured prominently. She met McClintock while studying Psychology at Michigan State University and Hailie has been quick to gush about him; she said:

"He's studied economics and is a top-rate golfer. We prefer cozy nights rather than clubbing. My dad likes him, too!"

In an interview with Mike Tyson, Eminem talked about how proud he is of Hailie:

"She's doing good. She's made me proud for sure. She graduated from college; 3.9."

Clearly, Hailie is on a great track!

It is fantastic to see a young woman succeed despite the adversity she may have faced in life. From the early days of inspiring Eminem to building a career of her own, Hailie is on a great path. Don't you agree Hailie has on a great path? Be sure to pass this on to others so they can see how she's grown up, too!
