After 16 years together and four years of marriage, Jason Momoa and his wife Lisa Bonet are “parting ways.” The couple made the announcement in a joint statement posted to Momoa’s Instagram on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

“We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding ~and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring,” Momoa and Bonet began the post.

“And so~ We share our Family news~ That we are parting ways in marriage. We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~ But so that~ as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~to be who we are learning to become…” they continued.

Since their joint announcement, new details have emerged in a PEOPLE exclusive published on Jan. 19. The magazine interviewed two anonymous sources, one of whom revealed that Momoa and Bonet “have grown apart because of different focuses.”

Momoa met Bonet for the first time in 2005, though the “Aquaman” star has said that he’s had a crush on her since he was a kid.

"Ever since I was, like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV, and I was like, 'Mommy, I want that one' I'm like, 'I'm gonna stalk you for the rest of my life, and I'm gonna get you,'" Momoa joked on "The Late Late Show” in 2017.

The Beginnings Of A Relationship

Nearly two decades later, Momoa and Bonet ran into each other at a jazz club. In the same talk show interview, Momoa explained how he asked Bonet for a ride home, which turned into drinks at a bar.

"I can't say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day that we met," Bonet said in a 2018 interview with Porter magazine. "In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do. He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style."

Just two years after meeting in 2005, Momoa and Bonet had their first child together, Lola.

"I really can't tell you what the hell I was doing before I had kids," the Momoa told Men's Health in 2016. "Wasting time. I think I was pretty reckless and definitely a bit out of control. Now I'm more focused. I probably love myself more and take care of myself more because I want to stick around."

The Hollywood couple welcomed their second child, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, in 2009.

After having two children, the couple finally tied the knot in a secret ceremony in 2017.

"You know what, I've been married to my wife for 12 years," Momoa said of his wedding, referring to how long he and Bonet had been together. "It's just a gathering of our families and celebrating our love."

And since then, their relationship seemed stronger than ever.

“Jason is an alpha male who stands for love and family. Having an absent father, then to be fully met by a man of that stature, is really incredible,” Bonet said of her husband in 2019.

PEOPLE Magazine’s Exclusive

But PEOPLE Magazine’s exclusive on the couple’s relationship makes it seem like the split was a long time coming.

"They have been doing things separately for quite a while," an insider told PEOPLE of the couple.

"They were a great couple with a lot of love and respect for each other, but people change and goals change and they weren't the same together anymore," they added.

The rift grew, the source explains, due to Momoa’s busy schedule. And the pandemic didn’t help, as the actor contracted COVID-19.

"They have grown apart and the pandemic capped it," the insider told PEOPLE.

Another anonymous source — this one close to Bonet — said that the trajectory of Momoa’s career also contributed to the relationship’s end. As the actor has grown in popularity, so has his time away on location. At the same time, the source says that Bonet has enjoyed staying home in LA, adding that Bonet "has had no interest in joining" Momoa on set.

With that said, this won't be a messy breakup — at least that’s what this source maintains.

"It's not going to be some scandalous divorce where they trash talk each other," the source told PEOPLE. "They are both very spiritual and believe in a higher power."

Fans from around the world reacted to the couple’s breakup on social media.

“They had such a cute story. She was his childhood crush, said he would marry her one day & then did. Their family dynamics seemed so heathy & positive. Wishing them all the best in the next stage of their lives,” Heather Best tweeted in response to the news.
