This year’s Academy Award for Best Original Song went to Elton John (72) and Bernie Taupin (69).

It’s been 25 years since Elton John won his first Oscar in 1995. Back then, he and lyricist Tim Rice triumphed in the same category, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song with "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from Disney’s The Lion King.

This time Elton John received his second Academy Award for "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman,” a biopic based on his very own life.

Bernie Taupin, Elton John’s longtime collaborator, wrote the lyrics for the winning tune and also received an Oscar for his work. It happened to be Taupin’s very first Academy Award.

In their acceptance speech, Elton John expressed his gratitude towards Taupin with whom he has been making music for over 50 years and thanked his longtime friend for always being there for him.

“Thank you to Bernie, who has been the constant thing in my life — when I was screwed up, when I was normal, he’s always been there for me,” he said in his speech. “This is a dream for us. We’ve never been nominated before for anything like this”

Bernie Taupin also had some emotional words to say about Elton John:

“Being here with this guy…I don’t even have words for it,” he said. “This is just justification for 53 years of just hammering it out and doing what we do.”

Elton John went on the praise the performance of Taron Egerton (30), who played the leading role in "Rocketman" but was not nominated for an Oscar.

"I’m Gonna Love Me Again” was originally recorded as a duet by Elton John and Taron Egerton but at the 2020 Oscars Ceremony, Elton John performed the song in a solo performance earlier that night.
