Members of the military are real-life heroes. When the people of our country need a symbol to aspire to, they don't need to watch the latest superhero film, all they have to do is look at our brave men and women in uniform.

Nevertheless, life is not easy for members of the service. Along with long deployments in far off and often dangerous countries, those who serve are separated from their families. In addition to missing out on the day to day joys that come with having a family, they also miss important milestones in the lives of their spouses and children.

TV host Ellen DeGeneres has made it a point to show her gratitude to members of the military and their families. Recently, the host surprised the wife of one member of the military. Jessica Gerren is the wife of Christopher Gerren, a United States Marine.

A beautiful couple, the Gerrens already had a baby daughter, Madison, and another child on the way when Christopher was deployed to Afghanistan. Despite Christopher’s absence, Jessica carried on, taking care of the couple’s baby daughter in their North Carolina home by herself. Deployed for seven months, Christopher missed the birth of his second daughter, Remington.

Appearing as a guest on Ellen’s show, Jessica spoke of how hard it was being separated from Christopher all those months. The TV guest had a surprise for the young mom, though: Christopher was available to talk to her live on national television.

As the young couple began speaking, Ellen went backstage to address a problem with the studio’s sound system. In the second shock of the day, Ellen revealed that Christopher was back from Afghanistan and in the studio. Jessica ran to her husband, kissing and embracing the Marine with tears in her eyes.

After the couple’s happy reunion, it was time for Christopher to be surprised. As the Marine chatted with Ellen onstage, Jessica brought out their two beautiful little girls. Scooping Madison into his arms, Christopher then laid his eyes on Remington for the first time.

Ellen wasn’t done surprising the family yet. As the four Gerrens stood onstage together, Ellen told of how greatly she appreciated everything the family had sacrificed for the nation. To show her gratitude, Ellen gifted the family with an all expenses paid trip to St. Lucia. The host also teamed up with Groupon to give the Gerrens $10,000 in cash.
