In Ellen DeGeneres's birthday show airing on Tuesday, she made a touching tribute to Kobe Bryant, the basketball legend who died in a helicopter crash on January 26, and reminded us all to celebrate life.

Ellen came out on stage for her monologue with an opener to say that "life is short." The show was being taped on a Monday, the day after Kobe Bryant's death which also happened to be the day of Ellen's birthday and the Grammy Awards (for which she was nominated but didn't win).

Although it was meant to be a celebratory day, the news of Bryant's death came as a tragedy which Ellen wants to see as a reminder to "celebrate life." Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, 13, died in Los Angeles helicopter along with 7 other people reported the AP.

She went on to say, "Life is short and it's fragile. We don't know how many birthdays we have."

She tearfully asked audiences to tell somebody that they love them that day: "Do it now. Call your friends, text your friends. Be nice to the people at the DMV." That is a beautiful reminder for us to do so every day.

Ellen then went on to use her own advice and tell her staff, colleagues, and wife how much she loves them. Her colleague Twitch came out on stage to get the audience on their feet and spread love with dancing, but then sent his own message by telling Ellen that he loves her too.
