Since her kidnapping over 16 years ago, Elizabeth Smart has worked hard to regain her life and feel safe again. This process has just become more challenging on the heels of the news that one of her kidnappers has just been released from prison.

Smart was a normal 14-year-old girl living in Salt Lake City, Utah when she was kidnapped from her home late in the night of June 5, 2002. The perpetrator snuck through her window and woke Smart, taking her at knifepoint from the bedroom that she shared with her little sister.

The terrified young girl endured nine months in captivity with her captors, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. Finally, Smart was spotted on a street only 18 miles from her home. It was a joyous reunion as her parents immediately came to retrieve her from the authorities.

After much deliberation, Mitchell was sentenced to two life terms in prison as punishment for the kidnapping. As an accomplice, Barzee got off easier with only 15 years in jail. However, despite her refusal to cooperate with the mental health professionals in prison, Barzee was released from incarceration five years earlier than expected.

As of September 2018, Barzee is a free woman. What is more terrifying is that her new home is only 600 yards from an elementary school. Understandably, Smart is upset about the decision to release Barzee early. Not only does she have to live with this fear again, but she is also concerned for the children that could be in danger.
