It was a day of singing and surprises when talented Laine Hardy showed up at the American Idol second season auditions. Hardy was there to accompany his friend Ashton Gill on guitar and was not intending to audition.

The judges were not expecting Hardy to show up with a friend who was auditioning. So, when they saw Hardy, everyone was surprised and immediately came up to him and gave him their warm hugs. But soon the judges learned that he was not there to audition, but instead, to play the guitar for Ashton Gill who happened to be the sister of Hardy’s best friend.

If you may recall, during the first season of the rebooted American Idol, Hardy was a name to follow. Although he earned himself a ticket to Hollywood, unfortunately, he was eliminated before making the cut to the Top 24.

“We don’t know if we are making a mistake,” Luke Bryan uttered, one of the judges of the competition on the night when Hardy was eliminated. But to Hardy, being eliminated on the show was not the end. Rather, it became an inspiration for him to work more on his craft. Thus, his hard work paid off with the release of his debut album In the Bayou in 2018.

After the warm hellos, Gill’s audition took place. She sang parts of Chris Stapleton’s “Broken Halos” and earned herself a nod from the judges and advancing to Hollywood with a golden ticket.

But the judges would not end this awesome reunion without hearing Hardy sing. And so, without any intention of auditioning, the judges encouraged Hardy to audition on the spot. With the coaches wishes, Hardy did a cover of “The Weight” by The Band. Wowed by Hardy’s voice and confidence in singing on stage, the judges handed him a golden ticket and will definitely be going to Hollywood with Gill.
