Elephants Found Sipping From Backyard Pool

In a video posted online, one woman travelling in South Africa was surprised to look out at the terrace at her accommodation and find a group of elephants drinking water from the swimming pool. At least six elephants can be seen huddling around the small pool, using their trunks to drink water on what must surely be a very hot day.

The video begins with the woman recording from inside her accommodation, as she notices something going on outside just beyond the terrace. As she opens the sliding door to get a better look, it quickly becomes clear that there is a group of elephants right at the edge of the wooden terrace, slurping up water from the small swimming pool.

Clearly surprised, there is quiet excitement in the woman's voice as she continues to capture the wonderful footage of the elephants. The majestic animals, however, do not seem bothered by her presence, as they continue to drink from the pool. It's amazing to see these enormous creatures calmly hang out poolside, with an absolutely stunning landscape behind them to match.

In total six elephants can be spotted, with two rather small in size, suggesting they are babies or very young elephants. What's so beautiful is that although the animals can be very defensive in the wild when threatened, here they appear so placid and calm that it's almost soothing just to watch them drinking.

Commenters on the video have discussed how sweet the creatures are, with one user writing, "so cute!!!!!!" as others speculated about where the incident took place. Although unconfirmed, another user wrote that it was allegedly at the Thanda Game Reserve in South Africa, specifically they guessed it was at "Lodge 3, because it's the elephants' favourite [sic]."

While the exact location will remain a mystery, reserves in Africa are very popular for wild animal watching. There are numerous locations where one can stay and go around on safari to take in all the incredible flora and fauna that the continent has to offer.

And while it wouldn't be guaranteed that elephants would pop over for a backyard drink during a stay, it's probably much more likely to happen on a reserve than in a residential neighborhood.

While the video is very sweet, it does raise questions about how extremely hot the temperature must have been that day for the elephants to not only find the pool as a water source but then drink from it too. The climate in Africa is incredibly hot and although elephants are built to withstand such conditions, surely they also feel the heat when temperatures soar.
