Elementary Schoolers Take Yoga Classes To Help Them Face Childhood Trauma

Yoga for kids is now the tool that is helping elementary students from Lake Park Elementary in Oklahoma deal with the ups and downs of life. Many people already know how amazing yoga can be for adults; now, it is helping children learn how to calm down and focus while they go about their school day.

Many adults take yoga classes as a way to relax and get rid of the many stresses we all deal with. Yoga has many focusing and calming techniques that can help adults melt away the stress that they feel. So it would make sense that introducing yoga into the school’s curriculum would help the children get a great start to their day. Of course, kids can do a lot more wiggling and fussing when they are striving for the yoga poses.

It is perfect for kids who need to burn off a little bit of energy. It helps their minds settle down so that they will be more relaxed and ready to learn during the day. While cheerful and energetic music plays, the kids bounce and jump in place. They all find their own little slices of Zen in this way.

Why should the kids try yoga? Kimberly Hefty, one of the teachers who works in the school district, stated to KFOR that the children need a way to start fresh before class time. A yoga class allows them to focus on something early on, paving the way for a productive and calmer day. If you have ever been with a group of kindergarteners, then you know how difficult it can be to get them to settle down for even a few minutes. Yoga gives them this chance.

The children are asked to travel to their own special place like a “secret garden” when they first lie down. Once they are there, the students imagine the type of world that they want to live in. For students dealing with childhood trauma, yoga offers them a great way to calm their thoughts and just be. Are you ready to learn more about the program?
