Dementia is an extremely sad disease that millions of men and women suffer from every single day. While there are plenty of other diseases that affect your mind and body in terrible ways, dementia is definitely one of the worst.
Dementia will slowly steal your mind, bit by bit. It robs you of your memories and your knowledge of the world around you. If you have a loved one who is suffering from dementia, then you know how hard it can be to watch the disease progress.
Nick Harvey writes music for television, from drama and documentaries to commercials. He certainly comes from a musical family, as his father, Paul Harvey, already studied music decades ago. While Paul is now 79 years old, he has a wonderful musical past that includes writing music for school dramas and performing as a concert pianist.
Unfortunately, dementia took over his health in the past few years.

According to Nick, his dad's mind often seems to get lost in an entirely different place. As Nick wrote on Twitter,
"Dad has dementia. Sometimes he drifts into another world and I feel like I’m losing him. He is never more present, however, than when he plays the piano. He came to mine today and I asked him to play one of his compositions. He thought he wouldn’t be able to remember it."
The piece was written for a school drama and is called “Where’s the Sunshine?”
Even though Paul told Nick that he forgot the song, his son had luckily put aside the sheet music for the song and pulled it out for him. Once the music was in place, Paul astounded everyone with his ability to play every note to perfection.
His entire performance was completely effortless.
When he was done, Paul dropped his hands to his sides and told his son that the song brought back a lot of memories.
Nick knows that music means a great deal to his father. He now tries to get him to play the piano as much as possible. He said it has definitely helped him focus, despite the disease he is dealing with.
