Parents are usually willing to make sacrifices to give their children the best chances in life, but children don't always do very much in return for all their parents' generosity and sacrifices.

For 75-year-old Catarina Raymundo of Cotzal, Quiche, Guatemala, this problem manifested as a very harsh reality that she has been forced to endure. When her son abandoned her, she was forced to live out on the streets. Before Catarina's life took an unfortunate turn, she had a home that was furnished with valuable things. Her son wanted to study accounting in the United States, but he needed money to pay the tuition. Catarina decided to make a big sacrifice and take out a mortgage to pay for his schooling.

Catarina used her house as collateral for a college loan, and she also sold all of her valuable belongings to enable her son to make the trip to the United States. She was betting on the hope that her son's career would bring prosperity to her when he returned from the United States. Unfortunately, Catarina hasn't heard from her son since he departed Guatemala. Soon, Catarina's mortgage went into default, and the bank seized her house, forcing her out onto the street.

Lucky for her, a local church found out about Catarina's tragic story, including a man named Alexander Cedillo. He put together a fundraising initiative to pay for a new home for Catarina, and she now has a home again. Even though her son abandoned her in a destitute state, she hopes to see him again soon. Catarina does not hold a grudge against her son, but when her story went out on the internet, people were furious about it. People pointed out that her son was ungrateful, and some suggested that he may not have known about her predicament. Hopefully, word will get to him, and he will return to her and repay her for her sacrifices.
