In the United States, we usually expect the elderly to be cared for by either their children or else government programs; however, that isn’t the case in all countries. In the Philippines, a man that is so old that he can’t even remember his age was burdened with the overwhelming task of caring not only for himself but also his two disabled daughters.
Tatay Arunting has no way to make money, so he had to make a long journey from his home to the nearest town so that he could beg passersby for money each day. The journey took an hour each way.
Life hadn’t always been this difficult for Tatay but, with his wife having passed away, the elderly man was forced to single-handedly care for this entire family without the help of a spouse.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case for long! With the help of some good Samaritans, Tatay made a turn for the better in a short amount of time. When Netizen Frances Baena heard about Tatay, he followed the elderly man home and learned about all that the elderly man was facing.
He was horrified to find that Tatay and his daughters were living in a filthy shack. To gain support, Netizen turned to social media to share the story and look for help.
As soon as people were made aware of the situation, they began to help. Donations came from all directions, empowering Netizen and his friends to build a house for Tatay and his daughters to live in. This house was also near the town, so that they could get the help of neighbors when necessary.
On top of housing, the family was given a full stock of food and medical care at a local hospital.
With the help of these good Samaritans and the countless online donations, Tatay is no longer forced to walk hours each day, giving him the chance to stay home with his children. Because of these thoughtful people, it is now possible for this impoverished family to have a much brighter and happier future!
This story should inspire us to look around for those who are in need and do what is necessary to give them a helping hand. Although we may have better government programs in the United States, there are still many families that are struggling. How do you plan to help them?
