Elderly Man Has An Accident In His Pants But A Woman's Response Leaves Him In Tears

The story of veterans is sometimes a tragic one - these brave men and women are frequently forgotten by the country they served. Fortunately for Elmer, his fellow humans were still looking out for him.

Lisa Jackson works at an assisted care facility. This job has given her experience in helping out the elderly and spotting potential problems. And on this particular day, Lisa wound up taking her work home with her.

She was shopping at Kroger when she noticed a veteran in a motorized cart. She smiled at him, but he didn't reciprocate.

Lisa could tell, just from looking at him, that something wasn't right.

She followed her intuition and asked him if everything was okay. Her hunch was correct - the man had colon cancer, causing him to have an accident. He knew if he got up from the motorized scooter that everyone would see it. He was humiliated, and worried about how strangers might react to his condition.

"The look of his dignity lost left me with a lump in my throat," Lisa said later. She had to help him.

Luckily, Lisa knew just what to do.

She discreetly approached the Kroger staff and explained the situation. They reacted like a well-oiled machine, bringing the man wipes and clean clothes. They let him change in the staff bathroom, out of sight, much to his relief. Thanks to Lisa's quick-thinking and the staff's willingness to help, the veteran was taken care of. He was eternally grateful to them.

When the man finished cleaning up and changing, he returned to his groceries. There was a surprise waiting for him. Someone had anonymously paid for his groceries - they were all bagged and ready for him to take home. The man shed tears of joy. In only an hour or two, his day had gone from miserable, to better, to fantastic - all because of the kind acts of a few strangers.

Walter told Lisa that he'd served in both Korea and Vietnam. Lisa recounts his words in her Facebook post: "...up until [that] day, he said he thought his country forgot about him."

They talked and cried together as they realized that ultimately, humanity is still good. To say it restored their faith in humanity would be cliche - but that's exactly what happened on that quiet day in Kroger.

Lisa posted about the incident on Facebook. It went viral, and was shared 56,000 times. She thanked Elmer, Kroger, and God for the experience, that she'd been able have to have such a touching conversation with a man who'd been through so much. Elmer bestowed words of wisdom on her that touched her heart. While it began as an awkward situation, the event ended in a touching way.
