If you have respect for the elderly, nothing gets you angrier than hearing about someone trying to scam them. Sadly, many older adults find themselves caught up in telephone scams.

Recently, an elderly couple got caught up in a Target gift card scam that almost cheated them out of $4,000. Thanks to the alertness of a Target cashier and another employee, the scammer behind the alleged fraud never collected.

Out of the proverbial blue, an elderly couple received a call from a stranger. The mysterious stranger informed them he was a police officer and that their grandson had been arrested. The only way to get him out of jail involved purchasing $4,000 in Target gift cards according to a report from the Hanover Sherrif's Department.

The couple thinking the man on the phone was who he said he was immediately drove to Target to buy the cards. Thankfully, the employees they came in contact with knew something was up.

Matthew Tebbens and Mariah Thomas, employees who work at Target, began to question the couple about why they were purchasing two cards at $2,000 each. Once the couple opened up about the situation, the Target employees realized a scam was taking place.

According to the report, "Both Matthew and Mariah explained to the couple that they believed they were being scammed. This simple act of kindness made the couple question their decision and they too recognized they had fallen victim to a heartless scam."

Soon after, a call was placed to the local Sheriff's Department to report the situation. The Sheriff's Department acknowledged the good deed performed by the employees. The kind and considerate act performed by the two employees saved the elderly couple from a significant financial loss.
