Ellen DeGeneres sure has some famous friends. The affable talk show host has welcomed the biggest stars on her show, including former First Lady Michelle Obama, Meghan Markle, acting legends Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Gosling, Will Smith and Brad Pitt as well as popstars Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Kanye West and Garth Brooks.

Born on Jan. 26, 1958, DeGeneres first made her mark starring in the sitcom “Ellen” from 1994 to 1998. She went on to host “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which debuted on Sept. 8, 2003. The show mixed celebrity appearances, comedy and human-interest stories.

The light-hearted talk show introduced celebrity jump scares, surprises for fans and cute quizzes in which famous stars would reveal their secret crushes. Some of the more famous segments of the show include “Burning Questions,” in which DeGeneres fires personal questions and celebrities hit a buzzer to answer, and “Chat Time With Ellen,” in which she interviews people who have become viral hits on social media. Another hit was the segment “Heads Up” where players had to guess what is written on a card on their foreheads by watching the other player act it out. This segment was such a success that it was eventually turned into an app.

The show has also seen its fair share of incredible guest hosts taking over DeGeneres’s role temporarily, including Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson, Robert Downey Jr., Alec Baldwin, Jennifer Aniston, Trisha Yearwood, Brad Paisley and Miley Cyrus.

The combination of star power and fun games and segments was a hit with viewers, and the show has since gone on to pick up 63 Daytime Emmy Awards.

One of the most popular segments of the show was when DeGeneres invited regular men, women and children who had found social media fame for an interview. These guests ranged from single moms to heroic teenagers and adorable kids. Among them was Kai Langer. He made multiple appearances on the show ever since a video of him singing along to Bruno Mars’sGrenade” went viral when he was only 4 years old.

In his adorable appearances, Kai professed his love for DeGeneres and danced and sung his way into the hearts of American audiences everywhere. When he was 8, he was again featured on the show.

Kai started off by presenting DeGeneres with an A4-sized red Valentine’s Day card, adorned with his school picture in a big love heart surrounded by smaller hearts as well as the words: “You are the nicest. You are my first girlfriend. You are great. You’re the best. You are beautiful. You make me happy.” In the middle of the card in big, bright words it said, “I love Ellen so much!” After reading the card out loud to DeGeneres, the host was clearly touched by the gesture and gave him a kiss on the cheek, adding she would keep the card forever.

After they chatted about his last appearance on the show and singer Mars, Kai talked to DeGeneres about how he wanted another little sibling but one that was already 5 years old as otherwise, “All you can really do is just rub its head.” At this point, DeGeneres invited Kai to take the floor to sing a song he had picked earlier, Ed Sheeran’sThinking Out Loud.” Kai stood up and closed his eyes in preparation, but he truly wasn’t prepared for what would happen next.

Kai then began belting out the ballad as DeGeneres watched with a huge smile on her face. Near the end of Kai's performance, the audience started screaming. A look of fear passed over DeGeneres’s face as she clearly hoped that Kai would not notice the screams and spoil the surprise. But Kai, who had been concentrating so hard on singing that his eyes were closed, didn’t notice the commotion. At first, it was unclear why the audience applauded. Then Sheeran himself strolled onto the stage.

The British pop superstar then walked over to the couch and perched himself on its arm as Kai continued to sing. DeGeneres shot the singer a proud mama look as Sheeren smiled and laughed at the joyous moment.

After Kai finished singing, he stood proudly for applause but was still unaware that Sheeren was standing right behind him. He sat back down on the couch and was then prodded by DeGeneres to look behind him. He turned and was shocked to see the singer behind him. He gave a nervous but adorable little wave before mustering a sweet “Hi” to the pop star. Before Sheeren left to get ready for his own performance, he gave the little fella a high five and the audience cheered.

Moments like these are what set the show apart, so it’s a shame that it has since ended, with the last episode airing on May 26, 2022, which featured special appearances by Aniston, who was the show’s first-ever guest, Pink and Billie Eilish. DeGeneres bid a tearful farewell as she said:

“I hope that what I’ve been able to do in the last 19 years has made you happy and I was able to take a little bit of pain away from a bad day.”
