Ed Sheeran Teams Up With Comedian James Corden For Outrageously Fun Ride As They Perform Carpool Karaoke

In a 2017 segment of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, Ed Sheeran joins the British Late Late Show host for a drive through Los Angeles. They sing together, discuss Sheeran’s personal life and see how many Maltesers Sheeran can fit in his mouth.

For those who aren’t familiar with The Late Late Show’s Carpool Karaoke series, Corden invites celebrities from politicians like the former First Lady Michelle Obama to pop stars like Ed Sheeran for an informal interview in his car as they drive through town. And as the name suggests, Corden invariably insists that he and his guests do a little karaoke.

Sheeran is perhaps the ideal candidate for Corden’s karaoke special given that he’s won a plethora of awards for his singer-songwriter chops. In 2015, Sheeran even won Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for Thinking Out Loud at the 58th GRAMMY Awards.

Corden enthusiastically teams up with the award-winning singer to perform most of the British songwriters biggest hits like Shape of You, Thinking Out Loud and Sing all the while driving through Los Angeles. And to the pleasant surprise of Sheeran, Corden seems to know all the lyrics. Not to mention that he has some pretty intense dance moves.

But what makes Corden’s Carpool Karaoke unique isn’t just the music, or even the crazy dance moves — though Corden and Sheeran make a good duo. Rather, because Corden asks personal questions in such a relaxed atmosphere, the interviews are particularly insightful.

Early on in the video, Sheeran opens up about traveling for three months, taking a short break from music and parting ways with his smartphone. After Corden asks about his break from the internet, Sheeran explains that he just doesn’t have a phone or social media anymore; instead, he uses email.

“I’d wake up every morning and there would be like 50 messages, and none of them would say, ‘Hey, how are you,’” Sheeran said. “It was fine at the beginning, and it just got really, really draining by the end of it.”

But after “getting perspective,” foregoing everything except for email, taking some personal time to travel and finishing his third studio album, Sheeran says in the 2017 interview that now “everything is great.”

Of course, Corden is a comedian, so he doesn’t let the interview get too serious. In the middle of the interview, Corden even pulls out a large jar of Maltesers balls, a British candy, and challenges the singer to see who can fit more in their mouths.

Sheeran, who is apparently known for his Malteser prowess, somehow stuffs 55 into his mouth, vastly surpassing Corden’s 26. But to really appreciate the comedy of two grown men stuffing dozens of Malteser candies in their mouths on camera, you have to see the video for yourself. What’s more you can hear the entire interview with Sheeran as well as all of the duos karaoke hits (there are a few hidden gems). And if you’re not an Ed Sheeran fan, Corden has dozens of other celebrities on the show like Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and Paul McCartney.
