Ed Sheeran & Elton John Bring Holiday Cheer With New Single 'Merry Christmas'

Dec 06, 2021 by apost team

Christmas is a time of light and joy for families that celebrate the joyous season. In fact, the anticipation for Christmas begins quite early in many countries; usually after Thanksgiving in the United States. Radios stations begin to put all the past Christmas hits in their repertoire, which consist of the classics of the past that include religious and non-religious music, as well as modern hits such as the iconic "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey and the long list of hits by Michael Buble that are loved the world over.

Now, a Christmas hit released by two of the most celebrated musicians of our time, Elton John and Ed Sheeran, have released their own single to bring in some extra holiday cheer! Sheeran and John co-wrote and released the song on Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, and their video has already gained over 12 million views in 3 days! This is quite an incredible feat, but it is not unexpected. Sheeran and John are two of the most accomplished musicians in their own right, and it is only natural that their combined talent brights out what could become the next biggest holiday hit after Buble and Carey's trailblazing music.

Before the release of their track, the duo teased fans about the release of "Merry Christmas" in a very creative way. Much like how some songs are distinctly Christmassy, there are some movies that are also synonymous with the Yuletide, one of which is cult favorite "Love, Actually." Read on to know about how Sheeran creatively announced their new song.

Rolling Stone reported that in the run-up to dropping "Merry Christmas," John and Sheeran released a couple of teaser clips, and in one of them, they referenced the iconic cue card scene from "Love, Actually.

In the video that was shared on Sheeran's Instagram account, Sheeran can be seen announcing to John, "Last Christmas I received a call from my mate Elton John," and added "And he told me we should do a ‘Christmas Song.’ And I replied, ‘Yeah maybe in 2022.’ But I actually wrote the chorus that day." This teaser was posed one week before the release of the song, which had many music fans atwitter about what John and Sheeran had in store for them.

Rolling Stone also reported that the musicians’ global record and publishing royalties from this single as well as the profits from sales of the single during the holiday season in 2021 will be donated equally between the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation and The Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The highly-anticipated single seems to have all the excitement and joy of Christmas sprinkled into it, with lyrics from Sheeran such as "So kiss me under the mistletoe / Pour out the wine, let's toast and pray for December snow / I know there's been pain this year, but it's time to let it go / Next year, you never know," and John joining him as he croons, "We've both known love, but this love we got is the bеst of all / I wish you could see it through my eyes, then you would know."

The chorus is sung together: "Feel like there’s so much love/All our family and friends are together where we all belong/Merry Christmas everyone." The song is sure to ignite a lot of holiday delight in everyone who hears it.

The video for the song is also suffused with all kinds of Christmas cheer. John and Sheeran bring their best outfits into the snow-falling, fairy-light bathed video, and both of them are decked out in several of their best holiday outfits, from sequined tuxedos to very short Santa-like robes as they go through various Christmas-themed scenes. The song is certainly a masterpiece of sorts, and the fact that all proceeds go towards good causes is very much keeping with the spirit of generosity and kindness.

There are already over 15,000 comments on the video at the time of writing this, and almost all of them are positive.
