In even the most extreme and dangerous circumstances, mothers go to great lengths to protect their children from harm even at the sake of their own well-being.

Just as one young mother’s life was coming to a brutal end, her last thoughts were to protect her baby’s life using anything she could find.

When a baseball bat was not enough, she found the ultimate protection for her child in a toilet.

Jessica Arrendale, a 33-year old woman, fell in love with a 30-year old Marine, Antoine Davis. They soon had a child together, but their story is not one of domestic bliss. According to her mother, Jessica was the victim of physical and verbal domestic abuse. However, Jessica refused to leave her partner.

In September 2014, Antoine returned from a night out to the Smyrna, Georgia home he shared with Jessica and their 6-month-old child. He was drunk and in a rage. While Jessica was likely accustomed to abuse, she must have realized that this particular night was different.

While holding her baby in her arms, she ran up the two flights of stairs in their three-story townhome as Antoine chased her. She managed to grab a bat and attempted to use it as self-defense.

However, the drunken and abusive Antoine grabbed the bat from her and begin to strike Jessica. Jessica shielded her baby as she took several blows. She managed to escape and locked her and her baby in the bathroom.

Unfortunately, a locked door was not enough to keep Antoine out. When he broke the door down, Jessica saw that he had a rifle in his hands. After shooting Jessica in the head, he took his own life.

Police were quickly summoned to the scene when neighbors reported gunshots. Unsure of the situation inside the townhome, they used a surveillance robot initially to get a better idea of what was happening.

Unfortunately, the robot could not make its way up the stairs. Police eventually entered the property, and they first saw Antoine’s dead body. When they entered the bathroom, they found Jessica’s body strangely contorted around the toilet. She had somehow managed to protect her baby by using her own body and the toilet as a shield.
