Dying Dog Takes Wagon Rides Around Town To Lift His Mood

Apr 04, 2019 by apost team

Our dogs become beloved members of our household. So when we learn that our canine best friend doesn’t have much longer to live, we want to make their last days as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Joey and Allison Maxwell had been enjoying their lives with their dog, Maverick, for eight years. Unfortunately, this poor golden retriever was diagnosed with cancer in 2016.

Maxwell was anemic and had an infection. When the couple took Maverick into their family vet, the professional kept the retriever in ICU for two nights and three days.

When Maverick was released, his veterinarian informed the Maxwell family that their dog was going home on hospice care.

After recovering from the devastating news, the couple regrouped and decided to make Maverick’s last day one he’d enjoy. They couldn’t take him for a walk, as the dog was too ill to walk anymore.

So they found a wagon at Lowe’s that Maverick would fit in, and Joey headed to the store to buy the wagon.

Unfortunately, that model of a wagon was out of stock at their local Lowe’s store. The Lowe’s store manager found one, however, and put it together for the Maxwells after hearing their story.

Maverick was then able to go for his wagon ride. Maverick had a lovely day out and about in their little town. He and his family had hamburgers and dog-friendly ice cream. And nearly everyone who saw the dog wanted to love on the elderly retriever.

All of this special treatment caused Maverick’s cancer to go into remission for a while.

Maverick's cancer did eventually return. The dog kept his cheerful spirit up in an almost magical way. And Maverick became a star on his own social media page. People all over the world followed the dog's story.

In January of 2017, Maverick greeted his doggie parents happily. They played with him for a while. Then the Maxwells left the room for a while.

During that time, Maverick quietly went to sleep and passed away with no suffering.

Joey and Allison broke the news of Maverick’s death on social media and received thousands of condolence messages from Maverick’s followers.

Joey stated that Maverick continues to be a reminder that we should love each other and treasure each other every day.
