Dying Coach Fulfills His Dream by Handing Daughter Her Diploma: 'I Couldn't Be More Proud'

When a California community heard that a beloved coach had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, they didn't wait. They came together to make sure he could experience one of the most important moments of his daughter's life — before it was too late.

Bill Kerwin served as a youth sports coach at Huntington Beach Union High School District until he was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Less than two months after his diagnosis, he was taken off all treatments. "We really got the news (in) the last 72 hours that it's not looking good, treatment has stopped," Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen told CBS.

With Bill's condition deteriorating rapidly, the community mobilized. On March 16, 2026, dozens of people gathered at a park in Huntington Beach, California, for a special early graduation ceremony organized specifically so Bill could hand his 18-year-old daughter, Abbi Kerwin, her high school diploma himself.

Among those who showed up were the school district superintendent and Huntington Beach High School principal Danny Morris, who addressed the crowd, setting the tone for the entire event. "This is not our traditional ceremony," Morris told the crowd. "But it is every bit as real, every bit as important, and in many ways, more meaningful."

Throughout the ceremony, Abbi never let go of her father's hand. For a family navigating one of the hardest seasons of their lives, the moment was about far more than a piece of paper. It was about a father being present for his daughter at a milestone he was never guaranteed to see — and a community that refused to let that moment pass him by.

For Abbi, receiving her diploma from her father's hands carried a weight no traditional graduation ceremony could match. "This was so meaningful for me, and it really showed me how emotional this journey has been for me," she told CW affiliate KTLA after the ceremony. "I felt like I made a big step, knowing all my life after this that I got my diploma from my dad." Standing on that stage beside him, Abbi didn't hold back:

"I love you so much, you're the best man I've ever met."

She told her father in front of everyone gathered:

"I'm so proud to receive my diploma from you."

The road ahead is one Abbi has already mapped out. She plans to become a nurse — a calling that feels especially poignant given everything her family is currently walking through. And her father, even in the middle of his own battle, couldn't be more behind her. For Bill, watching his daughter step into her future has been the kind of moment that puts everything else into perspective.

The community around them, the school officials who showed up, the neighbors and friends who filled that park — all of it a reminder that some moments are too important to leave to circumstance. And when asked about his daughter, Bill Kerwin said everything a parent could ever hope to say:

"I couldn't be more proud as a father. I couldn't be more proud just as a man."

He told KTLA:

"She's driven, motivated, everything every parent could want."
