Whenever Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson’s name pops up, a strong, almost unbreakable and tough person automatically enters one’s mind. But just like any other person, Dwayne can have an emotional side, too — especially when it comes to his father.
When Dwayne’s dad Rocky Johnson died in 2020, people witnessed his vulnerable side for the first time while he gave his eulogy. At that point, he shared his biggest regret before his untimely passing. "I wish I had one more shot just to say goodbye, to say I love you, to say thank you, to say I respect you. But I have a feeling he's watching, he's listening."
In an interview with Vanity Fair in October 2021, Dwayne gave his fans a glimpse into his personal life as he talked about his complicated relationship with his father. As time went by, their relationship as father and son got better. But it didn’t come easily. Dwayne revealed how he looked up to his father while growing up.
“The irony is I f***ng idolized my dad as a boy,” he said. “I idolized him, man. And obviously that idealization started to wane over the years. But the older I got, and the more experienced I got, the more I could appreciate his love for me in that limited capacity,” he said.
But then Jan. 15, 2020, came. It was a sad day for Dwayne as his dad passed away that day. He found out about his dad’s passing while pulling off the freeway exit in Atlanta, on the first day of filming "Red Notice." People around him were all smiles upon arriving at the set. But he felt the opposite of what everyone was feeling at that time.

“I was just numb,” Dwayne told Vanity Fair. “I sat in my truck for about 10 minutes. And I didn’t know. … I was trying to figure out what my next move was. Do I call my mom? Do I call my wife? Do I call my dad’s wife?” he added.
Instead of going home, he decided to go to work because he remembered his father’s words: “The show must go on.”
Weeks before his father’s death, Dwayne had a fight with his dad. This was around the time his father published a memoir called "Soulman: The Rocky Johnson Story." Dwayne said his father told him about his plans to release a book, which he said he was “all for it.”
Then again, he had one simple request from him. “I was an advocate for it. I just had asked him months in advance, ‘My only ask is that you be real and open and honest and forthright with what you want to say, and be careful about what you say.’”
Dwayne received a copy of the book only after it was published. When he finally read through it, he couldn’t help but feel disappointed and distressed, as he told Vanity Fair, “So much of it, was not true.”
Apart from the story where his father said they got evicted from their house in Hawaii when he was 14, Dwayne was particularly perplexed about the “Foreword by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson," which was stated on the cover of the book. What made him angry was the fact that his father had made up all of it. That’s right, Dwayne had not written the foreword as was stated.

In the foreword section which his father claimed Dwayne had written, the Hollywood actor talked about how his father’s career had allegedly foreshadowed his. It said, “my dad was far more successful than I was, and for a much longer period of time.”
The line that infuriated him the most? “Rocky Johnson is responsible for everything I’ve done in wrestling, the movies, TV shows and overall business opportunities.”
And so the father and son got into a fight when Christmas came around. “We got into a massive fight,” Dwayne admitted. In his father’s defense, he did not proofread what his ghostwriter had allegedly written in the book. Concerning the introduction, his father said he did not know it was there. But the ghostwriter, Scott Teal, revealed in a podcast that Rocky instructed him to write and that had guided him.
"It was the biggest fight we’ve ever had, and we had gotten into some doozies in the past,” he said in the same interview with Vanity Fair. “I had leaned into my dad like I never had before because I was just really disappointed and hurt.”
But what he didn’t know was it would be the last time that he would ever get the chance to speak with his father.
“We had some good times,” he said. “We had some rough times. We had some fighting times. And my dad always knew that there were parts of his life that were f***ed up. And in the end, away from the noise, we had some pretty raw conversations about who he was, and who he always wanted me to be,” he added.
