Drew Barrymore Supports Britney Spears While Saying Each Person Deserves Freedom

For months now, Britney Spears' conservatorship battle has been in the news, with Britney herself weighing in on the matter ever since her June testimony in court. Since then, celebrities have publicly voiced their support for the pop icon, with everyone from Paris Hilton to Christina Aguilera chiming in.

Now, actress and TV host Drew Barrymore has given her public support in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. She explains that she intentionally chose not to give her opinion on the topic for a while, but since Britney has spoken out on her conservatorship herself, Barrymore wanted to publicly lend her support.

It's been over two months of legal proceedings and public support for Britney, in the face of her horrific conservatorship, wherein her father Jamie Spears has essentially managed her life and finances for over 13 years. The full extent of Britney's situation began to come to light earlier this year after the release of the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" in Feb. 2021 amid the ongoing "Free Britney" movement that calls into question the continued need for her legal conservatorship.

Recent updates occurred last month when a judge ruled that Britney can choose her own lawyer in the fight to end her conservatorship — a freedom that was only recently allowed to her for the first time in 13 years. This news came as a welcome change for the singer, who had been dealt with a blow after a judge denied her request to end her controversial conservatorship even after her explosive testimony in June.

Speaking to Kevin Frazier from Entertainment Tonight, Drew Barrymore appeared in the video interview as she promoted the upcoming second season of her talk show, "The Drew Barrymore Show." The duo touched on a number of pop culture topics with the discussion about Britney Spears' conservatorship a major talking point.

Barrymore explains that she "purposely" stayed away from discussing the topic publicly before as she didn't feel it was right, especially since she doesn't know Britney personally, but that she's "silently" been supporting her. She states:

"I think one of the things I thought that I could [do to] respect her the most is not Instagram about it, and not talk on social media. This is too big for that. But I also think on the other side of the coin, the noise had to be made in order to start to have change here. Social media is a very tricky animal. It can lead to great outcry and people listening, and it can also be a place that has a little bit of empty calories."

Now that's she's choosing to speak up — citing Britney speaking out herself as the impetus for her to do so — Barrymore is clear in her support of the pop star, saying:

"I feel that there's a human being at the core of this. But since she put herself out there more ... she's the key to her freedom. This is about her and her life and everybody deserves the freedom to make mistakes or a success of their life and everything in between. That is what a life is."

When Frazier mentions that Barrymore — who was infamous for her wild partying and reckless behavior in her youth — had the chance to live her own life, the actress makes the clear distinction that she was a child when all of that happened while Britney is an adult, suggesting that it's understandable why people were overly protective of her, but Britney deserves to live her own life. She adds:

"So whether it's about her or anyone else, I want people to have their civil liberties; to have the freedom to live their lives."

But while she's mostly kept quiet on the topic, Barrymore did touch on it back in February when she appeared on The Howard Stern Show, revealing that she had "so much empathy" for Britney. During her wild partying years, Barrymore was put in a psychiatric hospital at the age of 13 by her mother. She added:

"It's hard to grow up in front of people. It's just hard."

Having famously turned her life around after her wild teenage years, Barrymore won over the love of the public during her decades-long acting career, in which she mostly appeared in comedy films, as well as the recent show "Santa Clarita Diet."

Now she's carrying on her legacy with her talk show. For the upcoming season, she wanted to keep it real, so the show is going on the road — everywhere between New York to Los Angeles — and is opening up to hear from regular people, not just celebrities. The second season of "The Drew Barrymore Show" begins on Sep. 13.
