Nowadays, Barrymore is 47 years old and has changed a lot since the world first met her as a child star. Let's take a look at Barrymore's career over the years, the lessons she's learned along the way, and what her life is like today.

Early Years

Barrymore was born on Feb. 22, 1975, in Culver City, California. She grew up in West Hollywood until she was seven years old before moving to Sherman Oaks for about seven years. Afterward, she relocated back to West Hollywood when she became emancipated at the age of 14.

The actress has been in the spotlight since she was just a child. She first found fame with her role in the Steven Spielberg film "E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial." Barrymore continued to show just how talented she was at a young age and starred in the adaptation of the Stephen King novel "Firestarter" in 1984.

Growing up was filled with challenges for Barrymore as she struggled to adjust to her new life as a child star and struggled a lot. The actress' more rebellious side also came out during many of her roles in her teenage years before she finally landed the roles that many people associate with her today – a leading lady in the world of romantic comedies. However, she has plenty of strengths in a litany of genres.

Soon enough, Barrymore found herself as an established actress in the business, finding another great breakthrough with the film "Charlie's Angels" in 2000, which also featured Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. It was the first film in the "Charlie's Angels" film series, based on the television series of the same name that featured Kate JacksonFarrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith, with Cheryl Ladd and Shelley Hack later joining the series as replacements for Fawcett and Jackson.

The actress also has plenty of strengths behind the camera and has worked as a director and producer for a handful of projects, including "Santa Clarita Diet," in which she also starred. Barrymore is even the founder of her own production company called Flower Films, which has produced a number of the projects the actress has worked on over the years. Expanding her personal brand, Barrymore also launched a cosmetics line under the Flower name in 2013 and has since released makeup, perfume and eyewear. The creative and talented woman also has her own clothing line.

Speaking with Glamour UK, Barrymore talked about how starting her cosmetics line Flower Beauty has helped her learn how to cover any imperfections or insecurities naturally with makeup rather than a cosmetic procedure. Barrymore said, "Not messing with my face or chasing some unnatural beauty is a standard I live by. I feel more human and more vulnerable every year of my life, but I also know how to appreciate every year more and more, too."

While it seems like Barrymore has already accomplished everything a person could hope for, she has continued to grace people's screens in other ways apart from her acting, directing and producing. Barrymore is also the host of her own talk show called "The Drew Barrymore Show." The show first aired on Sept. 14, 2020, and has had a number of famous guests along the way, including some of Barrymore's personal friends, such as actors Sandler and Keanu Reeves and actresses Diaz and Liu.

Barrymore's work alongside Sandler has continued to remain some of the most loved in her filmography, including movies such as "50 First Dates" and "The Wedding Singer." After starring in so many movies together, it's no surprise that Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have become great friends. While they typically appeared in these films as romantic partners, Sandler and Barrymore have been able to uphold a long-lasting friendship in Hollywood.

They have also supported each other in their career paths and in their personal lives, being there for each other during difficult times and uplifting one another during times of celebration. While many fans grew to love Sandler for his work in films such as "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore," the actor received rave reviews for his work in the crime thriller drama "Uncut Gems." Back in January 2020, Sandler was honored with an award for best actor for his work in "Uncut Gems," and was presented the award by none other than Barrymore, according to TODAY

Presenting Sandler with the award, Barrymore said:

"I love this man so much, and I have always believed in him. This moment, honestly, couldn't be more deserved. I know that everyone is rooting for you because you have earned everyone's respect. You deserve the best, you give the best and you are the best. I love you very much."

It's clear that Barrymore's heartfelt words meant a lot to Sandler, as he got choked up while thanking her for the sentiment. He said, "Drew, that was amazing… I'm glad we met, and I'm glad we did it all and we always make our movies together." He added, "I love you, buddy. And I love your kids, and I love everything about you."

Long-Lasting Friendships

The friends have also been sure to show off their companionship in other ways over the years. Back in 2014, the pair shared a hilarious moment together singing about their longtime friendship and on-screen romances during an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." In October 2020, Sandler was a special guest on Barrymore's talk show, showing his support for her and all of the work she's done to get to this point in her career.

Over the years, Barrymore has made plenty of other friends in Hollywood as she has continued to grace the entertainment industry. One of those friends is Reeves, an actor who is most famous for his work in "The Matrix" and "John Wick" franchises. While appearing on "The Drew Barrymore Show" on Dec. 21, 2021, Reeves talked about his latest film while also reconnecting with his longtime friend.

Barrymore and Reeves have known each other for more than three decades and have enjoyed many fond moments together over the years. Recalling some of their fondest memories together, Barrymore reminded Reeves of the time he took her on a joyride on his motorcycle when she was just 16 years old.

"Can I take it back to a memory that I have with you?" she asked the other actor. "I was at this club and it was my 16th birthday and you came in – this is the memory I have of it, if you have anything to add or change please let me know – and you walked in and you grabbed my hand and you took me outside and you put me on your motorcycle."

Finding Her Freedom

Clearly remembering the moment himself, Reeves simply responded, "Oh, my." Continuing the story, Barrymore said, "And we drove at the warp speed of my life. We went, and you took me on the ride of my life. And I was so free; I was such a free human being."

Relishing in the memory of such a cherished moment, Barrymore continued, "It was just this moment where I just remember loving life and being so happy, and I hold it so dear because the older we get, the harder it is to get that feeling." The pair also tried to recount whereabouts they drove together and just how fast they must have been going. "Oh wow, we probably went fast," Reeves said. Barrymore agreed, adding, "So fast. Like, irresponsibly fast."

Barrymore also considered the moment as the time where she truly understood what freedom is and remembers that time as when she felt the most free. Reeves agreed that riding a motorcycle is "thrilling" and has a freeing feeling, but he described working as an actor as what gives him his personal sense of freedom. He recalled acting in school productions as "play" and a nice mix of "make-believe" and reality. "I love what happens after someone says 'action,'" Reeves said. The moment after that is where his freedom truly lives.

While Barrymore seemed to have everything going for her, she also had to overcome some personal struggles. In the past, Barrymore struggled with substance abuse and considered herself a "party girl" at the age of 8, according to The Guardian

The Importance Of Family

She received treatment numerous times and is now sober and celebrating the hard work she's done to get to this point. Speaking with CBS, she said, "It's almost like I breathe a sigh of relief for telling my truth and I would like to move forward in a more honest fashion that is more conducive to my mental peace."

Barrymore has also encountered heartbreak over the years. She has been married and divorced three times. She first married a bar owner named Jeremy Thomas in March 1994, but the pair filed for divorce within just a few months. Barrymore began dating Eric Erlandson shortly afterward and tied the knot with him in 2001. They even worked together in the film "Charlie's Angels." However, they split in 2002.

Barrymore has two children with her third ex-husband, Will Kopelman. Although Barrymore's childhood was difficult, she has learned how to be a better mother because of it. Speaking with TODAY in 2018, Barrymore talked about how she approaches motherhood with a positive attitude. "They've made me such a calmer, better person," she said about her children.

Speaking with Demi Lovato in 2021 on the podcast "4D With Demi Lovato," Barrymore said that she also sets healthy boundaries with her daughters as her mother never implemented any. Thankfully, Barrymore and her mom are now "in a really good place."

In 2021, Barrymore also released "Rebel Homemaker," a cookbook that she wrote with professional chef Pilar Valdes. According to the Daily Mail, the book features photos of a makeup-free Barrymore as well as food that she regularly makes for her friends and family. "I relate food to love, to feeding my family," she explained
