This bird can also be referred to as the vulturine parrot or Pesquet’s parrot. It is found in Papua New Guinea and only in the forests in the foothills or lower mountains.

The Dracula parrot has some unique features such as bright scarlet plumage and a dark, dusty gray tail, back, and chest. These birds can grow to be quite large reaching up to 18 inches long from beak to the tip of the tail when it is fully grown, reports the World Parrot Trust.

So how did the Dracula parrot get its name? One of the reasons for the name is the bird’s terrifying call. It is said to be a very harsh and raspy sound almost like a growling. According to the World Parrot Trust, it is also known to scream out in flight. It is a very terrifying call coming from a bird, especially one that looks like that.

The Dracula parrot feeds mainly on a few species of figs. This bird has a featherless face. Many believe it developed this characteristic to help keep the fruit pulp from matting the feathers as it eats.

Many have never even heard of this bird. It's not surprising. They are very low in number and are almost endangered. Right now, there are about 20k to 49k adult parrots left, but these numbers are decreasing very quickly. The decrease in numbers is due to their feathers. Many hunters have pressure to get the feathers from the Dracula parrot.

Their environment is being overrun by people as well. These parrots do best in areas where humans are scarce because they need a low human population density. They seem to do well in western and central Papua New Guinea as it is an area with rugged terrain.
