Phillip Calvin McGraw is best known as Dr. Phil and is an American television personality. Just by scrolling through his Instagram account and seeing all the pictures he posts of his family, anybody can tell that Dr. Phil shares a close bond with them. According to People, he was even the best man at his son Jay McGraw’s wedding!

The talk show host was born on September 1, 1950, in Vinita, Oklahoma. According to Biography, Dr. Phil was a college football player (a linebacker) at the University of Tulsa who went on to earn his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of North Texas. He was a private practitioner before starting a self-motivation seminar called Pathways. At the same time, he ran a company called Courtroom Services.

Through Courtroom Services, he was hired to assist Oprah Winfrey in 1996 during her trial for being sued by cattlemen who had claimed that she defamed the beef industry on one of her episodes. Dr. Phil was successful in helping her win the case in 1998 and it led him to become a regular guest expert on Oprah’s talk show.

Four years later, he got his own show and it was so successful that it racked up the highest ratings of any new program in 16 years, since The Oprah Winfrey Show. According to IMDb, it has garnered 36 nominations for TV awards, including Daytime Emmys.

In 2011, People reported that he and his wife Robin McGraw were going to be grandparents for the second time. His son Jay, who also happens to be a talk show host himself, made the announcement on his show. Jay is married to Erica Dahm and the couple already had one daughter together named Avery McGraw, who was just a year old at the time.

The pregnancy was extra special as Dr. Phil shared that the baby was due on his birthday: “Robin and I are thrilled Jay and Erica are expecting again,” he said. “And the due date is my birthday–Sep. 1. Avery has been getting us into tiptop babysitting shape.”

As fate would have it, Erica gave birth to London McGraw on August 31st, 2011, just a day before Dr. Phil’s birthday. Nevertheless, they gave him the middle name “Phillip,” after his famous grandfather.

On his grandparenting style, Dr. Phil told People: “I plan to be the typical doting grandfather that gets to do all the fun stuff and none of the tough stuff.”

When London was born, there was probably no one more excited than Dr. Phil. "What a Bday! London Phillip McGraw arrived!!," he had tweeted, according to E! Online. "7lbs13oz. Mtr & baby doing fine. They BARELY made it to hospital in time! BARELY? We are so blessed."

London is currently nine years old and has proven that the similarities he shares with his granddad go beyond their shared names and birthdays (almost!).

Back in September in commemoration of National Grandparents Day, Grandma Robin posted a collage of six pictures of Avery and London standing side by side in various outfits including superhero costumes and their school uniforms.

She wrote: “OMG it's National Grandparents Day! How adorable are these two?! They have been posing like this for years! 😩❤️😍 I always say that being a grandparent is like entering the dessert phase of life. Phillip and I can't get enough of our sweet grandbabies!! #NationalGrandparentsDay

Dr. Phil As Grandpa

Fans were quick to point out the resemblance that the children have to their granddad. One user wrote: “They are so cute! You can definitely see the McGraw in them ❤️”

In an Instagram post by Jay showing the siblings in their school uniforms last August, one person commented: “Absolutely gorgeous these two. I see Dr. Phil is your granddaughter (sic) for sure! Lil cuties! 💕😍💙” The resemblance to Dr. Phil in London may be less apparent than his sister, but his striking blue eyes and a wide smile is undeniably taken from his granddad.

In 2016, Dr. Phil appeared as a guest on The Rachael Ray Show, which was interesting as he is usually on the other side of the couch doing the interviews and not the other way around. In the episode, he talked lovingly about Avery and London, how similar they are to him, and even shared photos of them with the audience. Watch the video below for yourself!
