We don't often realize how we take time for granted. We don't think about the time we spend with the people we love -- something that John Chan wanted more than anything.

John, 62, owns Donut City, a doughnut shop in Seal Beach, California. He and his wife Stella, 63, show up every day of the week at 2 a.m. to prepare fresh doughnuts before opening up to the public at 4:30 a,m.

For 30 years Donut City has been a staple for many Californians, but they didn't know that tragedy had befallen the couple. When customers began noticing that Stella wasn't showing up, they suspected something was wrong.

As it turned out Stella suffered a brain aneurysm which made it impossible for her to help John run the shop. Instead, she could only rest and undergo rehab. Each moment John spent at the shop was a moment he couldn't spend with her.

Their customers inquired about her absence, and when they finally learned about what the Chans were going through, they decided to help. They initially offered to create a GoFundMe account, but John declined. He didn't want money, he wanted time with his wife.

Dawn Caviola, 58, couldn't believe the news when she first heard about it. The 13-year customer told NBC News that she decided that she would help John have more time to be with Stella.

Since John's days end when all the doughnuts are sold, Dawn went to the community network Nextdoor to urge residents to buy as many doughnuts as they could to help him out. Thankfully it worked, but it worked better than anyone could've expected.

Dawn's post went viral, and soon everybody was buying doughnuts from Donut City. It was so successful that one Saturday morning, John sold out of doughnuts at 8:30 a,m. Talking to NBC, John said he couldn't believe it, and that he felt warm and happy before saying "Thank you to everyone."

Recently John revealed that Stella has been making a great recovery, and is regaining the ability to talk and eat. They hope that she'll be back in the shop in no time.
