Donny Osmond rose to fame when he joined his brothers’ band, The Osmonds, made up of Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay and Donny. During their peak between 1971 and 1975, the boy band was constantly top of the charts and created mass hysteria from fans wherever they went. Crowds of teenagers, often crying and screaming, would even end up chasing them. The phenomenon of “Osmondmania” was widespread, heightened by their clean-cut idol status due to their religious beliefs and wholesome lifestyle.
The Osmonds came from a large family with eight brothers — Virl, Tom, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Donny and Jimmy Osmond, and one sister, Marie Osmond, who was born into stardom as her brothers were already famous by the time she was born. When The Osmonds stopped producing music, Marie and Donny became a pop duo. They released the popular singles “Morning Side of the Mountain” and “I'm Leaving It All Up to You.” Their continued growth in popularity led them to front their own show in 1976 called “Donny & Marie.”
Considering his background, it’s no surprise to learn that Donny is a keen family man — not only does he come from a large family, but his career was forged alongside his siblings. Married to his wife Debbie Osmond, Donny would go on to have a brood of boys himself, five to be exact!
As a loving husband and father, Donny has a full personal life as well as a successful career. The performer is also a grandfather to 13 grandchildren. His large family keeps Donny busy, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. And it all started when Donny was just a teenager who met a beautiful cheerleader who just happened to be dating one of his older brothers at the time.

Donny first met Debbie when she was just 15 years old. Before Donny, Debbie had dated his brother Jay. In a Facebook post that included a side-by-side picture of the two of them at the same restaurant 40 years apart, Donny recounted their fairytale love story.
“She was the hot babe cheerleader in town and she dated my brother Jay before she dated me. It took me 3 whole years to win her heart and convince her to marry me,” Donny wrote and added: “We’ve shared a wonderful life together. Debbie gave me five wonderful sons. … Even after 38 years of marriage, she is still a very hot babe!”
The happy couple wed on May 8, 1978, and have been going strong ever since. Donny told People magazine Debbie came into his life at a time when he needed someone most, recalling a sad moment after a show in Hawaii with his brothers. Jay walked in on him, curled up in a ball and crying.
“My brother Jay walked in and said, ‘Donny, what’s wrong?’ I said, ‘I’m lonely,’” he recounted. “He said, ‘You just had thousands of girls screaming your name. Why are you lonely?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I just need someone.’”
After meeting Debbie, the pair kept their relationship secret for three years for fear it would hamper his career as a teen idol. When they finally went public with their love, their fears were realized. With his engagement announcement and the end of his “Donny & Marie” show coinciding around 1979, his hordes of fans disappeared. His career then hit quite a low point.
“We crashed and burned financially,” he told the publication. “It was the typical Hollywood story of having it all and then losing it all. So we had to rebuild.”

Donny’s career hit one of its “lowest points” in 1982 when his Broadway show, “Little Johnny Jones” opened and closed on the same night. The failure was so traumatic that even 10 years later, when Donny took on the role of Joseph in the stage adaptation of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” he would be plagued by intense anxiety.
“I would walk on stage knowing I was going to die. It was horrible,” Donny explained. However, the love of his life, Debbie, managed to help pull him through the uphill battle.
“Debbie said, ‘Why don’t you go out there tonight and do an average show?’ It ended up being the best show I ever did because I gave myself an opportunity to make a mistake,” Donny said. The show became a stunning success and ran for the next six years with Donny at the helm. However, Donny explained to People that his accomplishments could not have been possible without his biggest cheerleader by his side.
“Debbie has given my life stability. She keeps my feet on the ground,” Donny said of his wife of 44 years. “There was something simple about her, and I lived a very complicated life,” he also remarked of their early days together.
While Donny has gone on to see immense success with an 11-year Las Vegas residency with his sister Marie and memorable appearances on shows like “The Masked Singer” and “Dancing With the Stars,” the multifaceted entertainer knows that the most essential things in life lie closer to home.
“Family is the most important thing, because the curtain will come down eventually, and then what do you have?” he said.
