If you are like us, then you are probably an animal lover. You may even own a few animals of your own. Even if you don’t own a cat or a dog, we are betting that you would never want to see an animal harmed in any way. If so, you will love the happy ending to this story about a donkey who escaped during a bad storm.

The unlucky donkey somehow ended up getting out of his stable on a Saturday night in Killorglin, Co Kerry. A bad storm had caused floodwaters to rise all over the town during the evening and night, and the bad weather caused some damage to the gate the donkey was locked behind.

The animal found himself completely stranded in a nearby field the next morning after escaping through the broken latch. He ended up being surrounded by the floodwaters, which were quite deep after a nearby river overflowed its banks.

Animal Heaven Animal Rescue received a call from the owner, asking for their help in rescuing the stranded animal. A member of the nearby Killorglin Rowing Club, Mike Fleming, heard about the poor animal and his troubles reports The BBC.

He and a number of rescuers from the animal rescue were able to get a rope and a buoyancy aid roped around the donkey. After they had the rope secured, the group pulled the frantic animal to land.

A spokeswoman for the rescue said that the donkey is happily recovering at the local shelter while the stable is being repaired. The donkey, named Mike after his rescuer, is now happy and healthy as he waits for his shelter to be fixed. He was dried off and given a hot meal after rescuers brought him back to the shelter.

But the best part of the story is how happy the donkey looked after being rescued from the water.

Just look at this great smile. You can tell he knows exactly what happened! According to The BBC, the local veterinarian did prescribe some antibiotics to help prevent pneumonia. He also has a bit of fluid in one of his lungs, but the vet is confident that he will recover nicely with lots of love and tender loving care.
