Don Johnson And Melanie Griffith Say Daughter Dakota Was Part Of ‘God’s Plan’ & Are Proud Of Their Extraordinary Child

Melanie Griffith is the daughter of famous Hollywood actress Tippi Hedren and the late Peter Griffith. She was raised by her mom in Los Angeles. Griffith captured the attention of the public from a young age and was a greatly sought-after actress in the 80s and 90s. She is a mom of three and has several acclaimed movies under her belt. Meanwhile, her life is an interesting story that tells of her ability to bounce back from every setback she has ever encountered. 

Griffith struggled with drinking problems — she abused painkillers and alcohol — she was involved in a car accident and mauled by a lion on a movie set. She was also alienated from her mom by a director who was obsessed with breaking the former into submission. Tippi Hedren was the subject of Alfred Hitchcock’s — director of “The Birds” and “Marnie,” — attention, but she refused to give in to the unwanted affection.

Consequently, Hitchcock threatened to end her career. He also opened Hedren to attacks from live birds while making “The Birds” and hindered her from seeing her child.

Despite the early challenges in her life, Griffith became an acclaimed actress and a celebrated artist. Having celebrity parents, Griffith had the edge over others. While working, she also met her second husband, Don Johnson, the father of her daughter, Dakota Johnson, who followed their footsteps into entertainment.

Griffith and Johnson met on the set of “The Harrad Experiment.” 

“I thought he was the most beautiful person I’d ever seen,” Griffith recalled meeting Johnson. 

Johnson was 22 then, while Griffith was a mere 14, so her mother Hedren was understandably alarmed. However, she eventually gave them her blessings, and Griffith moved in with Don when she was 15. They got engaged on Griffith’s 18th birthday. 

The couple’s 6-month date culminated in marriage, but they also divorced in the same year in 1976. Afterward, Griffith and Steven Bauer met, and they tied the knot. In 1985, they welcomed their first child, Alexander. However, in 1989, the two divorced, and Griffith reconnected with Johnson and remarried her first husband. 

During this time period, Griffith was in rehab to mitigate her alcohol and drug use. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actress revealed that Johnson had been supportive of her during this time. 

“That was such a turning point,” she confessed. “I talked to Don a lot while I was in rehab. And I think we fell in love again on the phone.”

In the same year, she gave birth to Dakota. Hedren talked to People Magazine about the birth of Dakota. 

“She’s up in the clouds, she’s so happy,” Hedren said about her daughter. “[The baby] is something Melanie has wanted for a very long time, since she first met Don. He’s the love of her life.”

Griffith gave Johnson the word that they were expecting when he was shooting “Miami Vice” at the time. Johnson recalled getting “completely stupid” and “mush-faced” since. 

“This is God’s plan,” Johnson admitted at the time. 

While they went on to become incredible parents to Dakota, their marriage lasted only until 1996.

As someone in such a big, blended family filled with several busy professionals, Dakota was used to being surrounded by constant chaos during her childhood. However, she learned to embrace the busyness her parents Griffith and Johnson went through as they led fulfilling careers.

According to The Sun, Dakota received plenty of media attention living in such a famous family. She also moved from one school to another because her parents moved around so much for work, and had a hard time finding a source of stability. 

Even though Dakota told Hello! Magazine that her parents encouraged her to stay out of the acting industry while she was still a child, Dakota realized her passion when she was extremely young. 

“I couldn’t wait because I grew up on set,” she explained. “My parents were always working with amazing artists, and I just loved it. I wanted to be a part of it so badly.”

“Fifty Shades of Grey” might perhaps be Dakota’s biggest film yet. She joked in her monologue on “Saturday Night Live” that she understood why both of her parents did not want to watch the film. 

At one point, Johnson was asked by People Magazine if he would ever see the film, which heavily featured his daughter in nude scenes, he had this to say. 

“I would never see that,” he confirmed. “As a father, there are certain images that you don’t need in your head.”

Talking about his daughter more, Johnson was initially surprised that she wanted to pursue acting. 

“Little did I know, Dakota was in the background watching mom and dad all those years,” Johnson revealed. “She was learning her craft. And I’ll be damned if she didn’t learn it, maybe even better than mom and dad. She’s extraordinary.”
