The Interview Begins

In the video of the interview, it is clear that Colbert is a little bit awestruck by the guest he has in front of him. Unlike his conversation with other guests, Colbert never even approaches the subject of politics with Parton. He seems too interested in finding out more about the singer. As the conversation developed, it was clear that the two were genuinely enjoying the back-and-forth.

The two talked about the many twists and turns the year has taken, with Parton stating, "I can't wait for this year to be over, can you? Crazy!" Eventually, the interview turned to the subject of music and family. Of course, Parton had a lot to say on both subjects and one of her stories brought out some unexpected emotion in Colbert.

Bury Me Beneath the Willow

The moment came unexpectedly. Parton was discussing a song that her late mother, Avie Lee Owens Parton, had taught her. The song was entitled Bury Me Beneath the WillowThe country singer went on to explain that the song is supposed to be about a young bride-to-be whose lover left her at the altar.

Parton stated that her mother was fond of singing, but many of her songs were very sad in nature. The legendary singer then went onto sing a few lines of the song:

"Bury me beneath the willow, under the weeping willow tree

Where he may know where I am sleeping, and perhaps he'll weep for me.

But where, oh where can he be?

He's gone to seek him another bride, he cares no more for me."

The Reaction

As she finished singing, Colbert clearly got goosebumps and began to wipe his eyes. The surprised country star asked the comedian if he was crying, and Colbert admitted he was. The late-night talk show host admitted to being under a lot of stress and being struck by the beauty of her song.

Seeing Colbert's genuine reaction to the song was a reminder that this year has been difficult for all of us, including celebrities. It was also very nice to see that even famous people can get starstruck when in the presence of someone who they idolize.
