Everyone loves Dolly Parton for her incredible staying power as a songwriter, singer, and actress. Even though she has celebrated her seventieth birthday (and beyond!), she's still going strong.

Her talent in bringing heartfelt country ballads to life has given us hits like "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene". Performing for film and onstage, she has brought energy and humor to her loyal audiences. In 2003 she added another artistic feather in her cap when she recorded a patriotic ballad.

She included an emotional tribute spoken before her rendition in which she expressed her appreciation to the special forces who take so many risks to do their duty to their country. The tribute goes:

“The guys in special forces are usually the first ones into the war and often the last ones out. Imagine going into a hostile country, lightly armed, and with just a few men," Dolly says in the video. "What they do is so secret, they never get the recognition they deserve, and this is one time I want them to know they’re appreciated.”

What song could have such a moving introduction?

In 1966 Ssgt Barry Sadler wrote "The Ballad of The Green Berets" with Robin Moore. He performed it and turned it into a Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper in 1966. Since then it has served as a patriotic ballad and much more.

It is a kind of thank you from America to the best of the best of our troops who protect our nation. In 2003 Dolly chose the ballad for her album "For God And Country."

Dolly Parton has continued the patriotic tradition of singing this ballad that has lasted for nearly forty years. She gives the song a fresh life for a new and appreciative generation. Considering that she had her debut with her 1967 album "Hello, I'm Dolly", it seems fitting that she and the ballad would eventually find each other.
