If you're an animal lover you have a big soft spot for any abandoned dog. There are far too many dogs left in dire situations, enough to make you wonder what kind of friend we humans are being for those we call our "best friends." It can help to know that at least for some lucky dogs, bad times can be a short-term passage to something better.

The first six years of Journey's life were spent alone in a cage in Virginia. Poor Journey was being kept almost like a houseplant. It was an emotionally stunted life for a vital creature needing to love and be loved.

Things got worse once Journey's owner died. Locked away in a shelter, she was just as abandoned as she'd always been, but now there was a new threat. At six, Journey wasn't a puppy anymore but was now middle-aged. She was unaware of it, but Journey was on the schedule for euthanasia the very next day.

Fate then intervened. On that very day, the shelter was due for a visit from Knine Rescue, a group from Maryland that rescues shelter dogs. The Knine Rescue team had come to save a different pup altogether, one named Spec reports KTVU, who was also scheduled for euthanasia. The group hadn't known about Journey until they arrived.

The shelter convinced Knine Rescue to make room for one more dog. The day before her euthanization, Journey was about to live up to her name at last. But the best was yet to come.

While in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Knine Rescue stopped over at Sunrise Senior Center. Once there, the normally withdrawn Journey's entire personality seemed to blossom. It was as though they'd all been old friends. Journey fit the facility like a comfortable shoe. The connection was obvious, a bond was being made between a group of seniors and a once-abandoned dog.

"Dogs can come from these terrible situations and yet they are willing to try and love again," said Amy Creel, Board Member at Knine Rescue to FOX. "Dogs encourage me to be in the moment. I feel like at a senior living facility, that is such a valuable lesson for everyone to be reminded to live here and now."

This was where Journey was meant to be. Journey's journey had a joyous ending, among friends who could give and receive the love she'd been missing her whole life.
