Dog Owner Takes His Canine On Last Walk Around The Town After Lymphoma Diagnosis

Jun 16, 2023 by apost team

The interaction between dogs and their owners is usually sweet to watch, especially when a dog receives genuine care from their owner. Meanwhile, it is interesting that dogs can express their satisfaction about how they are treated similarly to how humans do. They can also mirror the expressions and actions of humans, including yawning after their owner does — a phenomenon scientists have pegged down to empathy. Dogs are also very friendly, helpful, and intelligent, which is one of the reasons many people opt to become dog parents.

However, the joy many people derive from their dog pets sometimes gets cut short due to how long dogs typically live. The average length of a dog's life is from 10 to 13 years, although the Chihuahua breed can live an average of 17 to 18 years. Notwithstanding, just as it is with humans, dogs can also get sick and die early. Dogs can be affected by the same diseases and illnesses that affect human beings, including gastroenteritis, Salmonella and cancer.

Mellow, a dog that has caught the attention of the country, was recently diagnosed with lymphoma and is expected to pass away sometime in June 2023. To mark the event, the rescue dog's adoptive dad, Kevin Curry, organized the last walk for his beloved canine on June 3, 2023, and invited their neighbors in Dupont, Pennsylvania, to take the last walk around the neighborhood with Mellow. The action which made it online warmed the hearts of people and left some in tears. Keep reading to learn more about this heartwarming event.

When Mellow got a lymphoma diagnosis, his owner, Curry, decided to do something special. Curry and Mellow had been walking the neighborhood twice a day since September 2019. Hence, Curry sent flyers to everyone to come and take one last walk with them on June 3, 2023, between 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In the letter, Mellow told the neighbors that they made his life "so much richer than any rescue dog could have hoped for." The letter explained that Mellow would die sometime in June 2023 and would love it if neighbors came out to "pat me on the head or rub my belly and I will be forever grateful."

It turned out that Curry would not be the only one to miss Mellow. When KJ Warunek, a resident in Dupont, Pennsylvania, heard the sad news, she went to say bye at Mellow's last trot since she had also lost a dog to lymphoma.

Warunek said she was surprised to see that many people came out for Mellow. “There were at least 25 people (on the first block). When I looked to the next block, there was another 20. I’m going to say that was how the whole walk went," she said.

Mellow had a great time with the children and other pets. Warunek decided to share the pictures on the Dogspotting Society on Facebook and was surprised by the traction it received.

"Not sure why I thought I could make it through this post without bawling 😭," a user commented, while another said, "Me boohooing over a dog I’ve never met. 🥺❤️. "

Mellow's story on YouTube also racked up similar sentiments in the comments section as everyone remarked about how Mellow was special and would be greatly missed.
