It's sad enough when a beloved pet passes away from old age or illness, but when a pet simply goes missing the owner is left confused and heartbroken.

All sorts of random thoughts flash through your brain about worst-case scenarios: was he hit by a car and is lying injured and in pain in a ditch somewhere? Did someone steal him to torture him to death by using him as a bait dog for a fighting ring? Is he just wandering the streets, starving to death? As time goes by, the grieving owner slowly loses hope of a safe return but continues to constantly wonder, is he out there somewhere alive and well?

Gunnar, a golden retriever, went missing. His owners searched everywhere. They tried to track him down by what they believed where his footprints in the snow. They called all of the shelters and put up dozens of missing dog posters. After months of no signs of Gunnar, his owners had mostly given up hope.

They got a call with the amazing news 20 months after his disappearance: Gunnar was alive and well, being cared for by animal control in Pittsburg. A dog had been reported running loose in Squirrel Hill, and the dedicated folks in the animal control division had worked hard to capture him.

Although he had no ID tag, his caring owners had done something all pet owners need to do: microchip the pet and make sure your contact information linked to the microchip stays up-to-date. If you are unsure about this, ask your veterinarian to scan your pet and provide you with information as to how to access the database the microchip information is stored in.

Gunnar's owners immediately rushed out to collect their dog. The dog was totally overcome with joy, dancing and wiggling in delight, when he saw his owners. His owners were likewise overcome with delight. Gunnar was going home!
