Recently, Hope for Paws, a Los Angeles-based animal rescue organization, got a call about at dog who had been abandoned at a local auto shop. The previous owner of the shop had moved eight months earlier and left the dog to survive inside the shop area alone. The new owners reached out to the rescue team in the hopes of helping. Hope for Paws volunteers JoAnn and Katie came quickly to see if they could find a way to rescue the friendly dog. This video from October 2020 is sure to warm your heart.

When they arrived, they found the dog cowering under a camper trailer trying to avoid the sun and hot pavement according to the video below. With an abundance of kind words and a few treats, JoAnn and Katie were able to coax the dog, who they soon named Blue Bayou, out from under the camper briefly.

The volunteers instantly observed that she was a very friendly and playful dog, but she was scared, hungry, and filthy, having become coated in motor oil while hiding under the camper. JoAnn and Katie could see her sweet personality as soon as she emerged from under the car, as she wagged her tail a bit and allowed herself a good stretch in the sun while they offered her treats.

“I’m in love with her already,” one of the Hope for Paws volunteers gushed as they worked to calm the dog’s fears.

However, Blue Bayou was still extremely timid and uncertain of her new companions. She quickly recoiled back under the camper to avoid the heat of the concrete on her already burned paws. The volunteers allowed her some space and shade and sat by the camper with her for a while as she settled into their presence.

After a good deal of reassurance and more treats, the ladies were finally able to slip the gentle snare around the dog’s neck in the hopes of getting her out into the open again and ultimately to the shelter for care.

The harness immediately stirred fear in Blue Bayou, and she pressed hard against her new friends refusing to budge an inch as they attempted to carefully direct her out from under the camper. With more patience, JoAnn and Katie were able to encourage the dog into the open area and finally into the crate for transport.

“This is sad. She’s a sweet dog. I think she really has a lot of potential to be a really good dog,” one of the Hope for Paws volunteers noted. The man who discovered the dog and had contacted the shelter initially agreed wholeheartedly.

Finally settling somewhat into the blankets in the crate, the dog was able to calm down enough to safely get her to the center. In a team effort, the local auto shop workers helped the ladies load Blue Bayou into the Hope for Paws rescue vehicle to be transported to the care center for some TLC.

Upon arriving at the rescue center, Blue Bayou received a warm bath to clean off the filth and motor oil plus needed medical attention to make sure she was otherwise healthy. Volunteers searched for an identification chip but were unable to find one.

After her bath, although still a bit timid, Blue Bayou perked up and began showing her friendly, playful side with the volunteers. She clearly enjoyed the loving attention after being left alone for so long.

She continued to grow and adjust with the help of Andrew Rosenthal and L.A. Dogworks, as they took her through training and socialization classes to help her get the most out of her new life. Blue Bayou was quickly ready to be sent to a foster home for more love and attention while she waits for her forever home.

Hope for Paws was so happy to be able to offer rescue and rehabilitation to Blue Bayou. She will become another success story in the fight for the proper treatment of animals. She will also become a much-loved and treasured part of her new forever family for many years to come. Hope for Paws and rescue organizations like it all over the world are helping to make a huge difference to abandoned and neglected animals like Blue Bayou.

This is just one example of a friendly, playful dog that needed a concerned person to step in and offer a second chance at life. If you love animals and have read and been moved by this lovely girl’s Cinderella story, please pass Blue Bayou’s tale of rescue and restoration on to others who might enjoy it also.
