Dog Hid Her 9 Puppies In A Ditch To Keep Them Safe From Her Cruel Owner

On a sweltering July day, a four-year-old boxer/pit bull mix delivered a litter of puppies all alone while chained up in a North Carolina backyard, the only home she had ever known. She was not given any kind of whelping box or soft blankets to welcome her puppies on. So, she did the best she could by digging a small den for the pups.

This was not her first time being a mother. Her entire first litter perished. When she had a second litter, all except one female died. As soon as this little survivor was old enough, she too was chained in the backyard, just out of mom's reach. By the time she hit six months old, she was pregnant.

The day after this third litter was born, the owner posted an ad on Facebook with a couple of pitiful pictures offering to give away Nana and her newborns. He was moving away and no longer wanted them. Concerned neighbors saw their chance to spring into action.

Good Samaritans

You see, these neighbors had been doing their best to help these dogs for quite some time. They frequently brought over food, arranged for rabies shots, and even went as far as to build Nana a shelter to protect her from the elements.

Animal Control had been called multiple times about the owner's abuse of the animals, but nothing was done to help these poor dogs.

When the neighbors heard that the dogs were up for grabs, they got busy right away. Those horrible chains were finally removed. All dogs were then moved from the premises to a safe location.

One neighbor immediately adopted the pregnant six-month-old female. Helpful neighbors then contacted Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill shelter in Salisbury, North Carolina, for help with Nana and her nine newborn puppies.

Faithful Friends agreed to take in the family and contacted Mr. Bones & Co., a rescue organization based in New York that specializes in pit bull adoptions. Mr. Bones & Co. agreed to cover the cost of caring for the mom and puppies while they remained at Faithful Friends and to transport them all the way to New York when the pups grew old enough.

The puppies were given names from the Peter Pan story, and Nana enjoyed tending to Tinkerbell, Tiger Lily, Jane, Wendy, John, Michael, Liza, Curly, and Peter Pan. Her good mothering instincts had kept these pups alive until help arrived, and she continued to lovingly nurture them until weaning time.

While the dog family was staying at Faithful Friends, staff members from Mr. Bones flew down twice to become more familiar with the rescued dogs and to gain their trust so that the upcoming transition would not be too difficult for Nana.

When the puppies were fully weaned, Chris and Doug from Pilots N Paws flew all ten dogs to New Jersey where a van was waiting to transport them to new foster homes

This Peter Pan family certainly got a fairy tale ending as every one of the dogs has been adopted by loving families. Pass this incredible story on to someone that could use a smile today and let us know how this story affected you!
