Dog Believed To Be 20 Years Old Found Mourning Beside Owner's Body

County sheriff’s deputies from Pottawatomie first came across a fairly old Labrador retriever in a rare occasion. The dog, named Sam was found lying next to her lifeless owner. The deputies could tell how confused and grief-stricken the dog was as she tried to push Arthur, the owner to wake up.

Now that Sam’s owner was no longer available to take care of her, the deputies called in the local animal rescue organization 1 Day Ranch to take over the responsibilities. This would leave them with adequate peace to determine Arthur’s cause of death.

The local animal rescue organization’s representatives stated in an interview with KOCO-TV that Sam looked unhappy when departing her home. Despite giving her enough time to say goodbye to Arthur, she displayed signs of dissatisfaction and whined all the way to the animal shelter.

“She whined and howled the whole way back to the Ranch,” staff said.

Arthur’s funeral was set on March 8 and Sam would be the last person to miss this important occasion. The ranch took its time to accompany Sam to say one final goodbye to her beloved owner.

The representatives from the ranch wrote on Facebook that they allowed Sam to take a look at Arthur before being lowered to the grave. Sam seemed to recognize the owner as she showed amusement at first. But somehow, she knew that Arthur was gone.

Back at the animal shelter, Sam seemed isolated and fatigued probably due to mourning and suffering from other medical conditions. The animal shelter’s owner, Maeghan Olsen revealed that Sam has been sleeping endlessly, without eating for the first five days she had been taken in by the rescue squad. They could tell she had been affected immensely by the loss of her beloved owner.

“She has been grieving, she is still grieving,” 1 Day Ranch founder Maeghan Olsen told KWTV.

Phillip Gordon, Arthur’s close companion, further quoted that Arthur had been suffering from heart conditions that had rushed him to hospital. But from how he loved his dog, Arthur checked himself out of hospital contrary to doctor’s advice, to go see his dog.

They were an epitome of the perfect match. Both Sam and Arthur would accompany each other to errands and do everything together. You could tell from how Sam received Arthur and how she reacted to seeing him.

The ranch, Sam’s current home are yet to decide if another owner should adopt the dog or let her live her remaining days within the animal shelter. Currently, they are giving her all the space she desires to grieve her deceased owner.
