Dog And Her Pups Retrieved From Pipe Covered In Snow By Rescue Team

During the long, cold winter, the Dog Rescue Shelter in Mladenovac, Serbia treats calls like the matter of life or death that they are.

With snow all over the ground and word that a dog was sleeping in a storm drain under icy conditions beside a regional road, they headed off.

Lucky they did, as it wasn't only a mother dog that needed help, but her brood of newborn puppies.

The rescuers had been informed the dog would come out if people passed by. This suggested to them that she was actively looking for help. They saw multiple pipes that were iced over and inaccessible. Then they came to one that was free of ice and had paw prints leading up to it.

They stopped their vehicle, got out and began to call the dog with a whistling sound. She soon came enthusiastically bounding out to greet them. Then this simple rescue operation got a lot more complicated. She was sharing the pipe with her three 4-week-old puppies.

They tried to call the puppies, but they only growled. They were scared, probably having never had any interaction with a human before. They encouraged the mother dog to go back into the pipe in hopes she would lead them out. But the puppies wouldn't budge.

So they put mama in their vehicle in a cage with a blanket. This way she would be safe and warm and out of the way while they tried to get her puppies out of the pipe. They put food on the ground at one end of pipe to try to lure them out. But they were so young, they weren't yet eating solid food. They still did not emerge.

With dusk closing in, the situation was becoming increasingly troublesome. They finally set up a two-man operation to get the job done. One man shooed the puppies with branches from one of the pipe. Another man awaited them at the other end with a broom in hand to literally sweep them out of the pipe.

With three pups in hand, they returned them to their mother in their vehicle. All four were taken back to the Dog Rescue Shelter and treated for parasites. Mama was fed a good meal so she could feed her puppies.

The shelter does such great work and they would love it if you would donate or spread the word with this article.
