Doctors Create A 3D Print Of An Ultrasound For A Blind Pregnant Woman

Pregnancy is already a tough time for women and their bodies, but imagine what life is like during that time for a blind woman. Not only do you have to navigate the world sightless with a giant baby bump, but the emotional toll of not seeing your baby’s ultrasound would probably be really tough.

For the visually impaired 30-year-old expecting mother Tatiana Guerra from Brazil, her doctors thought about that and made her a special gift to cope.

Tatiana lost her sight at the age of 17 and is now 20 weeks pregnant. She is able to feel her little baby’s kicks in her belly, and hear his heartbeat pump. One thing she cannot do is see his face on ultrasound as she goes for her doctor appointments. She looks forward to the day she can feel his face once he is born.

On a regular checkup with her doctors to see how the baby is doing, they surprised her with a chance to do just that—but before she gives birth. First, her doctor describes what he sees on the monitor, a nose that looks like his mom’s with closed eyes. The two talk about what she expects, and then fifteen minutes later a surprise comes into the room wrapped in cloth.

It’s a 3D print of her son Murilo with the braille text “I am your son” printed above it. She bursts into tears as she puts her hands over the image of her son and says,

“I’m very happy to meet Murilo...before he’s born.”
