Doctor Turns 34 & Delivers 2 Sets Of Twins In One Incredible Day — With One More Surprise In Store

Not every birthday shift ends with a story worth telling. But on April 8, 2026, Dr. David Vincent Ream walked into the labor and delivery floor at Independence Health System’s Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and experienced something that most physicians never encounter in an entire career — let alone on a single day.

Dr. Ream was an obstetrician-gynecologist who had been caring for two of his patients throughout their pregnancies. Both Jenna Campbell and Elizabeth Harr were expecting twins, and both were due around the same time. What Dr. Ream did not anticipate until shortly before the big day was that both deliveries would fall on April 8 — his 34th birthday.

Delivering twins is already considered one of the more complex and high-stakes procedures in obstetrics. The logistics alone — two babies, careful monitoring, coordinated timing — make it a moment that commands full attention. Doing it twice in one day, on your birthday, is the kind of coincidence that stops people in their tracks.

Everything went smoothly. The Campbell family welcomed a boy and a girl, as did the Harr family. Four healthy babies, delivered by the same doctor on the same day. “Twins are always a fun delivery,” Dr. Ream told Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE.

“It’s always a little bit more exciting to deliver twins, and to have two on my birthday,” he enthused.

His hospital, which delivers around 1,000 babies a year — far fewer than the larger medical centers that handle upwards of 10,000 — made the odds of this happening even more remarkable.

But the most extraordinary part of the day had nothing to do with twins.

Standing alongside Dr. Ream in the delivery room that day was Dr. Beth Maxwell, an OB-GYN with 36 years in medicine and education — and the physician who had delivered Dr. Ream himself, 34 years earlier. Maxwell had trained Ream throughout his residency, and the two had worked together since. But on April 8, 2026, their shared history took on a new dimension.

“It meant a lot to me,” Dr. Ream told PEOPLE of helping deliver four babies alongside his mentor on his birthday.

The hospital called it “a rare full-circle moment” that highlighted “both the continuity of care and the collaborative spirit of medicine" at Independence Health System. For Ream, the significance went beyond a single shift.

Harr said she had no idea the delivery had landed on Dr. Ream’s birthday until she saw him that morning.

“As soon as I saw him on Wednesday, I said, ‘Happy birthday,’” she recalled.

Meanwhile, Campbell described the experience of bringing twins into the world as “double the fun, double the feeding, double everything, but double the love.”

Dr. Ream called the day “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” — a phrase that carries extra weight given how unlikely the whole sequence of events was. Two sets of twins. One birthday. One mentor who had been present at the very beginning of his own life, now standing beside him as he helped begin four more.

“One of my goals is to be like Dr. Maxwell and deliver generations of babies,” Dr. Ream said.

After April 8, that goal feels a little closer — and a little more personal.
