What did you hear, “Yanny” or “Laurel”?

The clip was posted on Instagram and Twitter by social media influencer and vlogger Cloe Feldman, who asked her followers what they heard in the computerized voice clip. Most people are insistent that the word they hear is the right one and everyone else is crazy, while a select few can hear both words at the same time.

Thankfully there are some skilled audio analysts who were quick to share their findings after playing with the pitch and tone of this mind-boggling sound clip. The word you hear is dependent on the frequency of the device you’re listening on. So someone listening to this clip on their phone might hear it differently on a computer depending on the amount of bass being produced by your device.

Twitter user Steve Pomeroy played with the pitch and included links to the audio clip when it’s sped up by 20 or 30% versus being slowed down by 20 to 40%:

Did you hear both words now or still the same one?

How about when the bass levels are changed? Twitter user Earth Vessel Quotes adjusted the bass levels of the audio, which may give you goosebumps. With one simple change, you should be able to hear both words back and forth!

Despite people’s research on the sound, the internet remains divided on this issue and are certain that the word they’re hearing is the correct one.
