Divisive New Trend Has People Choosing To Pierce Their Fingers And Embed Diamonds As Engagement Ring Alternative

Although millennials might be marrying at a lower rate than their parents and grandparents did, that doesn't mean that they haven't given up tying the knot entirely. As with most aspects of their lives, millennials like to put their own spin on weddings and marriage. However, this new millennial engagement trend is incredibly shocking to older generations.

Some millennials are trading in engagement rings in favor of having diamonds embedded into their skin. This procedure is known as a dermal piercing and has been a staple in the alternative community for years. However, as KFOR reports, even straight-laced millennials are now getting these dermal piercings and many consider them to be a great alternative to engagement rings.

Proponents of the trend say that a dermal piercing is lower maintenance than an engagement ring, which can be lost or damaged. Furthermore, when you subtract the cost of the band, a diamond actually becomes a lot cheaper. This can be huge for millennials who are struggling to triumph financially. Those in favor of this bizarre trend also cite the fact that it's more permanent than a ring, as the gem is literally embedded in the wearer's skin.

However, just because some millennials are fans of the trend doesn't mean that they all are. In fact, a huge number of millennials were quick to criticize not only the trend itself, but the way the trend was being reported by the mainstream media. "I honestly don’t know any millennial that’s doing this," one user commented on Twitter, for instance.
