Experiencing feelings of hurt and sadness is an inevitable part of a child’s life as it plays a crucial role in their development.
And while parents often wish to shield their kids, protecting them from every disappointment they encounter is impossible.
For parents of twins, the sting of exclusion can be even more intense — especially if one child is acknowledged while the other isn’t.
Kristen, a mom of identical 5-year-old twins Jayna and Kinsley, found herself in this challenging situation when one daughter got a birthday party invite, and the other didn’t.
Feeling unsure how to handle it, Kristen, who goes by @thefoxsaystwins on TikTok, shared the dilemma with her followers.
The mom said: “I knew this day would come eventually, but I didn’t expect it to happen at this age.”
So, Kristen decided to contact the mom to clarify whether the invitation was for both girls or just one.
The twin mom continued: “So either both are going to the party or none are going to the party.”
She then explained that it wasn’t because she was upset with the other mom. It was only to protect her uninvited daughter from getting hurt.
She said: “I literally cannot think about the hurt that will cause in the girl that was not invited.”
Her video went viral, receiving over 770,000 views, with people requesting an update on the situation.
However, it also received mixed reactions as some viewers believed Kristen was unfair towards her invited daughter.
One commenter wrote: “Twin here… PLEASE don’t take away the opportunity of the one child to attend bc the other was not invited. That’s life. I love the idea of going to do something fun one on one during the party time.”
A netizen also chimed in: “Imagine the invited twin – I can’t go to the bday bc my sisters feelings are more important then mine. Thats the message being set.”
One mom explained how this could be a good learning curve:
“This is a perfect learning opportunity for them to understand that they are different people.”
However, others strongly backed Kristen up for her choices.
A person wrote:
“I am a twin, and I remember not being invited to a birthday party in the 6th grade, but my twin was – I still remember the hurt I felt. I absolutely understand your response.”
Another mother of twins agreed with Kristen, explaining:
“At 5 years old it is a package deal – especially if they are in the same class. when they are older and have separate friends then ok for separate invitations. I’m a mom of twin girls. 27 years old now.”
Finally, the birthday child’s mom responded, providing the closure everyone had been waiting for.
The mom said: “Of course both girls should come.”
She also expressed her confusion as to why the invitation didn’t reach both twins, as both girls were friends with her daughter and on the guest list.
This was a sweet ending for the mom and her daughters, and Kristen triumphantly captioned her final video update:
“And for all of you saying I should not have asked, I am so glad that I did!”
Viewers were also thrilled with how things went down, with one supporter saying: “As an identical twin myself you did the right thing 🙂 way to go momma!”
Another commenter speculated that the host mom might have seen the viral videos and decided to damage control, saying: “I wonder if she saw your TikTok – her answer would have been mine. I’ve done it; when a mum is brave enough to ask for an invite, I’m never going to say no.”
One thing’s for sure: Kristen handled the situation perfectly.
